Trouble in the Stool

Stuff like this in basketball is all over and this is just the tip of the iceberg. If some of these guys start singing for deals, then the whole rotten corpus may come crashing down. It will not be just a few associate coaches either.

This is an F.B.I. wiretap flip of someone on the inside and involves 2 Adidas execs, a couple of financial managers, a couple of agents and 4 assistant coaches at Southern Cal., ARIZONA, AUBURN, and Miami. There's no indication that the schools were complicit. The investigation is on-going and theres even an 800 number you can call. The Federal attorney even warned other coaches not to wait until they were approached but to call the F.B.I. directly. This truly is the tip of the iceberg.

How bad is it for an assistant coach to recommend an agent that MAY be able to benefit the player? It's still up to him. If he takes the advice and the coach gets paid, so what? Big deal.

From ESPN: “The investigation has revealed several instances in which coaches have exercised that influence by steering players and their families to retain particular advisers, not because of the merits of those advisers, but because the coaches were being bribed by the advisers to do so,” the papers said."

Bribery is a crime last time I looked.

"A private school in Florida was also mentioned in the court papers, unidentified by name. It is believed to be the University of Miami, with roughly 16,000 students.

The University of Miami's director of athletics said in a statement to CNBC: "The University of Miami is aware of the indictments handed down today. ... As we are just learning the details, we cannot comment on the actions taken today by federal authorities. However, if requested, we will cooperate in any legal or NCAA review of the matter."
