“We knew it would be a different game (for Tech) than last week,” Mike Stoops said. “They have too much pride, he's (Mahomes) too good a player. But I don't think we saw this. We've always matched up well playing Tech, even in our worst games. We've always had good plans and made ‘em work. Today just wasn't good enough in any real situation.”

OU's young defenders were torched frequently. But veterans Jordan Thomas, Ahmad Thomas and Jordan Evans were victimized too, beaten deep or missing tackles or not winning jump balls.

“We had no control,” Mike Stoops said. “At no time did we feel good about any aspect of what we were doing. Pressures weren't good enough, coverage wasn't good enough. There was nothing good. Offense did an incredible job. It hurts when you don't hold up your end of the deal, in any game.

“We gotta look at a lot of things. It's like I said, it's unacceptable at so many levels. I can't even begin to try to define it.”

No problem. We can define it. But can Mike Stoops fix it?

“I don't know,” he said. “We got no choice. Only go up from here.”

Last year, we were in the top 20 or so in most defensive statistical categories. I really hoped we'd turned the corner and Mike figured out how to defend these Big12 offenses.

This year, we're near the bottom. In everything. At first, I thought it was because we had some new guys, and we'd played some really good offensive teams (Houstonand Ohio State). But last night was just another shining example in the long line of shining examples of Mike Stoops' ineffectiveness as a DC.

I see Mike knows History like he knows defense.

2011/10/22 Texas Tech 41 - Oklahoma 38 W
2010/11/13 Texas Tech 7 - Oklahoma 45 L
2009/11/21 Texas Tech 41 - Oklahoma 13 W
2008/11/22 Texas Tech 21 - Oklahoma 65 L
2007/11/17 Texas Tech 34 - Oklahoma 27 W
2006/11/11 Texas Tech 24 - Oklahoma 34 L
2005/11/19 Texas Tech 23 - Oklahoma 21 W

If this were any other blue blood school, Mikes butt would have been fired by now...

I watched the Alabama game yesterday and just observing the way their db's played compared to ours is disheartening. Aggressive, like to hit, good coverage skills. Our guys look like a finesse D and almost like they've been coached not to take on any more contact than absolutely necessary to bring a ball carrier down. In other words, don't try to legally destroy the ball carrier but instead try to absorb the blow from impact and hang on for dear life and that's only if they choose to make the tackle. Sad

Deja vu. I swear I recall John Blake explaining his team's issues in the same manner after a loss back when. I never expected to hear that coming out of an OU coach's mouth again.
