Gone are the days that at season’s end you can sit back and just reflect on what could have been or take in all the season’s glory. Then just look forward to Spring football. Time to mellow out.

No more. Immediately after the last game, we have to deal with the portal transfers and NIL deals hoping that we can avoid losing players that weaken critical positions all the while seeking new players that will give us an edge in September. I hate it but know that’s the new norm. A lot to take in for an old guy with memory issues.

Too much about money. Every player in pro and college sports seems to have a whore mentality with no real loyalty to the team he plays for.
And watch the collective bargaining circus between owners and the MLPA. Many issues are being discussed, except for one issue....how to make the sport more fan friendly and more fun to watch. Baseball fans should not tolerate another work stoppage. Since it's all about money, then it's time for fans to boycott, which would speak well to the greed that's wrecking the game.

CT, I’m not sure there’s any concern about how fans feel about this crap. You nailed it. It’s all about the money. I never thought I would see the day that amateur sports would openly endorse play for pay. I am glad Bud is not here to see this.

And yet fans keep coming back again and again.
One more work stoppage and I'm done with MLB.
Two world wars and a depression could not stop baseball, but greed has trumped all three stoppages since 1972.
Fans COULD do something about it.....by staying away.

What happened to a college education which is worth several thousands of dollars free to a football player plus meals conditioning and lodging. Now they have this plus nil money. Wow what a change and what does the future hold?

This is the shame of the institutions of higher learning and how they've been forced to conform. But cfb brought this upon itself imo.

Unfortunately, today’s student athletes don’t comprehend how good a deal they have than the normal college student. Too many of them only think about the big pay check when they go to professional football but the NFL is only available for a few. Then it’s too late.

Like others have mentioned, how many of these kids will get into IRS issues right off the bat. Some of these college kids have no sense about them to begin with and then toss them $100,000 LOL what a fiasco
And no degree to fall back on. A kid bettin all his few chips on hittin it big. This is my biggest problem with this bullshit. Get your free degree just in case your dreams of an NFL career don't work out. I blame first, television then the big screen but foremost NFL owners and the parents of the portal/nil kids. Cfb dug it's hole also, imo.

CT you're right. It is all about the mighty $$ these days and it's actually why I have no problem withe players getting their share. TV contracts have expanded the audience and the money to be gained. All the while the players were left out. It's a billion industry these days and we the fans want to be entertained by young men. They should get their share. It's a helluva game. We all love it. The problem is there is absolutely no controls in place of any kind. Call it growing pains or whatever but the game has changed so so much just in the last few years. CFB needs to have controls in place. I don't think it'll happen though.

Thats one of the many reasons I lost all interest in pro sports. Too much about money and not enough about team and community commitment. I remember when you were able to count on Bradshaw coming back and the Steel curtain being in tact the following season. Now you never know....and its ruining college football.

Gambling and analytics. That's where all of this comes from. Once sports started doing fantasy stuff, allowing gambling, and turning sports into a complex board game, there is enough money and addiction because fans have real skin in the game, that the loss of traditional fans didn't affect the bottom line.

I'm not pro this situation. I'm just telling you my deep belief as to why this all progressed.

Hey, try this on for size:
The MLB players' union wants the minimum salary to be increased to $775,000 (from $570,000 in 2021)......the MINIMUM salary.
So the friends and family members of mine that have earned Masters Degrees or PhD's (that's 4 people) or have earned college degrees will earn less than half of $775,000.
As if I needed another reason to push away from a sport I have followed and loved for seven decades.

A player receiving money from nil, should expect to pay for part or all of their school and etc.

I have to say I agree with this. They better get control of this crap. Caleb Williams, God bless him, but I can’t respect the way he and his family have handled this whole deal. Go get a deal but stop dragging it out, it’s bad for the sport, shows you’re a horrible teammate and really only care about yourself. He could have been recruiting all along for USC or Wisc. Or whoever he goes to but instead his family just drags it out.

Caleb has potential but damn social media etc has made this out like we’re waiting on 4 time super bowl winner Joe Montana to make a decision here. Caleb has really accomplished nothing and this is all based on potential. No wonder Venables etc. moved on. NCAA or whoever better put some parameters in place or they’ll lose a lot of the fanbase. I don’t watch pro ball for some of these exact same reasons

So is this NIL money taxed? All those UT linemen making 50K a year, if my employer gives me a bonus its taxed

Great read, Belldozer.
OU....meaning Coach Venables.....did the right thing for OU's football program by essentially making Caleb's decision FOR him. And he was aggressive in doing it early on with Evers' recruitment and Gabiel's transfer from UCF.
OU did not "fire the first shot" at Riley and his bailout, but the barrage that followed was and is a complete rebound as far as I'm concerned.

Professional sports loves this NIL thing. No longer do they have to invest millions on a 20 yr old and hope he doesn’t run off the rails with that sudden influx of cash. They can watch various universities and sponsors put these kids through a kind of test-run before they ever get to the draft boards. I don’t know that it will help organizations such as the NFL, I think they will still throw good money after bad money, even with the litmus test of NIL.

Pro sports today isn’t the same as it was in the late 60’s, 70’s or even the 80’s. Its all about individuals and how much money they can make. Todays pro athletes don’t even give a rats ass about the fans but if fans would just quit attending those games it could and would send a very loud message to them. No fans means no value for the players.

With NIL , CFB is headed in that direction with big time recruits thinking they can hold teams for ransom. This will lead to higher ticket prices down the road in my opinion. $100 per ticket prices for a single game is already a bit to much for the average family. I love CFB and especially OU football but one game a year is about my limit that would turn into about $500 after travel and food to the game. Thank goodness for TV deals is all I can say.

Yes, thank GOODNESS for TV…..but there will always be fan’s asses in the stadiums. Nothing is going to change that.

With this "new age" of how sports are presented to us, I'm glad there's Netflix, the History Channels, and various movie channels to watch in my twilight years.
I burned out on the ridiculous behavior and attitudes of so many athletes, politicians and the media....and the way so many tolerate and adhere to this bullshit.

Yeah, thank goodness for Yellowjackets, Yellow Stone, American Rust, etc. 😂

Heh heh, the history channel keeps things real for me my man, true tellings. Dang almighty, you couldn't be more right CT. 👍

Amen, Woody.
And why let your blood pressure rise watching the so-called political “experts” on TV pimp their divisive BS.
cfb football for me brother is about to be in my rearview mirror. I got my captain's license not long ago and am about to embark on the next faze of my life in April. Gulf coast brother, Aransas, St Charles, Mesquite bays as well as Cedar Bayou. My dream. 😁

Where you at Rockport?

I live in San Antone for now but yes, I'm set up in Rockport/Fulton. My fifth wheel has been stationed for 6 years. At Sand Dollar. Right off Fulton Beach Rd.
My good buddy Tommy Ramzinsky lives there been a fishing guide many years down there won one of the FLW tours several years back. He's gotten into fishing those big Marlin tournaments now said he's kind of burned out on bay guiding.

Open water screwed me up probably 15 years ago, aint got it right since. I cant't express my enjoyment with bay fishing anymore than I guarantee everyone on my boat will catch their limit.
