From Today's Dallas Morning News....

What does it say that Sonny Cumbie turned down a million dollars and the opportunity to be Texas' offensive coordinator?

1. He really likes working with Doug Meacham, who calls the plays for TCU.

2. He really likes working with Kenny Hill, odds-on favorite to replace Trevone Boykin.

3. He really likes working.

Answer: Probably all of the above, with a heavy emphasis on the third possibility.

If Charlie Strong doesn't have a better season in 2016 -- and that probably means at least eight wins -- then Texas is in the market for more than an offensive coordinator.

Losing out on Cumbie certainly seems like a blow to Strong for at least a couple of reasons. First of all, Cumbie might have done wonders with Texas' disastrous quarterback situation. Cumbie and Meacham made a Heisman contender out of Boykin almost overnight when it looked like he wasn't much more than a wide receiver playing out of position.

Of equal concern is the image it projects: A TCU assistant, who doesn't even call the plays, turns down Texas' invitation to be offensive coordinator.

Friends, this is not your father's Big 12 anymore.

Certainly you'd assume that Cumbie has been assured he'd take over play-calling duties should Meacham leave for a head-coaching vacancy. Even so, Cumbie was guaranteed just such a role at Texas, which apparently doesn't carry the weight it once did.

Strong now turns his attention to Tulsa's Sterlin Gilbert, who's risen quickly from Eastern Illinois to Bowling Green to Tulsa, where he worked under former Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Also once worked under the old man, Art Briles, a plus when it comes to your offensive pedigree.

If he's offered the job, Gilbert may turn out to be an excellent hire. Of course, that's assuming he takes it. Shouldn't really make those assumptions these days.

Wow!
