STRICKER and BYRD

B-)
From the Big XII media conference call.

Stoops on players not being sportsmanlike. Asked to address...

Sure we do. They need reminded again, but obviously when you have inappropriate language gestures when they're in the heat of the moment immediately, with an intense game like that - - - It'll be dealt with internally and we're already working with them and teaching them on that kind of behavior.

========

I laughed when I read that. Bob is always understating things.

If I were a player, that's not the kind of teaching and being worked with, that I'd be looking forward to.
That's you, Bob has worked and dealt with players. He knows what to do. He has a lot more experience than any of us.

We should follow Baylor's example: Schedule Lamar and make them sit out for that one...........

As a player and no matter how badly provoked, you simply cannot flip off the opposing fan base. Byrd should have to sit the Tulsa game IMO.

As far as Striker, he was in the Vols crosshairs for having the temerity to not kiss the SEC's collective ass in his comments the previous week. It was very similar to the venom Coach Stoops caught from the SEC nut-swingers (yeah, I'm looking at you, Finebaum) when he referred to so much SEC media coverage as "propaganda" before we played Bama in the Sugar Bowl. Butch Jones had Striker's comments and his photo posterized/framed all over campus and all over the UT football facilities as a means of motivation for his team and fanbase. How dare someone challenge the premise that the "sixth place team in the SEC would win any other conference" as I've heard too many SEC fans spout on too many occasions.

Bottom line, as far as Jones and the UT fanbase reaction to Striker--to hell with them. As far as Byrd, he's earned the punishment I've described.

You can bet your bottom dollar if opposing players flipped off the OU crowd, there would be a tremendous amount of blow back from it. Gosh there are/were many that didn't like Manziel's 'money' hand signals.

And then we could miss out on a final four opportunity with the same record as those who made it, like Baylor and TCU did last year.

Great strategy.

You obviously are a poor detector of sarcasm. My comment was made with tongue firmly in cheek.

Every year, the Longhorns marching band enters and exits the Cotton Bowl tunnel with several members flipping-off Sooner fans. The trumpet players do it the most because they have one hand to play and the other often is free. I've seen it with mis own ojos. It actually makes me laugh.

Hope this doesn't get blow out of proportion....again. Everyone is so dang sensitive anymore.
This is not a case of being sensitive at all. In an era where players routinely exhibit such behavior, it's now considered part of the game by the younger generation of fans.....and/or those whose lives are defined by the exploits of 18-22 year olds on a football field.
Stoops did the right thing in suspending Byrd and Striker. My hope is that the team has taken notice, even if the fans don't.
The decline of sportsmanship is at the lowest point I have seen in my lifetime. I see it fading out completely very soon as our culture decides to equate sporting events with real life and even warfare.

While I don't condone it, is it really that big of deal? Nope. As bw stated, society today is overly sensitive

Yes they are, nowadays you have to watch EVERTHING you say and do at work, on the field etc. People are just waiting for you to mess up. An apology is all that is needed in both these two cases.

CT don't you think you are over blowing this just a bit? Players did this stuff when I was a teenager back in the 80's..its nothing new. I also haven't read anything about Stoops suspending either one of them.

When things like this get so much Media Attention, it starts to seem as though 'Bad Behavior' is being blown out of proportion. Think about Barry and some of the incidents he had to deal with...Nigel Clay...CT...Boz's 'Shirt'...Those were literally Game Changers...

I don't support the crude remarks and finger flipping of Byrd and Striker. Regardless of where they go in life, they will forever represent their parents and OU...I hope they learn to do a better job of that. I also hope that we, as fans, are able to focus on their positive points, rather than this 'young and foolish' isolated incident. Striker is a Team Leader...He has the rest of the season to prove that he's leading in the right direction. My $$ is on him!

Yep, with the advent of cell cameras everywhere, we've become a voyeur society. All the ugly we didn't know about in our youth is now 'in your face'.

I like the old ways better...what I didn't know didn't disgust me.

It seems like a few on here completely understood his profanity laced tirade he made about the frat incident, yet they have a problem with what he did after this game. Makes no sense.

I'll tell you this right now. I was sitting in the section that the players walked up to on their victory lap and not one fan said something to them until Striker said "FU Tennessee" and was pointing at our fans in the first row. In that first row was a family with a little girl. I was just a few rows up from the bottom and saw exactly what happened. I don't like what Jones said to him but you don't act like that.

Both players face "internal" punishment and that means a suspension. And regardless of when and where "this stuff" occurred, it still shows a lack of sportsmanship and class. You can breathe easy, it's now part of the landscape of sports, now more than ever.

I'd be very surprised if there was a suspension. Personally I think you are getting a little carried away here buts of course thats your opinion. People involved in sports have been flipping people off for years and yelling at opposing fans/players. I agree Stoops has to point them in a better direction but I'm not in the suspend them camp.

Also on the Tenn site they have a video of a OU assistant coach talking to Striker and pointing up to the section where recruits and family's sit. That's when Striker walked to that section and starting cursing Tenn and the SEC.

Personally I think you're missing the point. I don't give a hoot what happens to him and his off the field laced filled rants like this past spring. He was follish then and even moreso now. He was in full uniform and on full display to all and for all to see. He used the stage of a televised game to unleash his weakness in the lack of handling himself. He may be a Captain to some, but he now has placed an undue burden on the team's image. Butch Jones might have been wrong to speak directly to Striker, but what he told him was spot on. Striker absolutely has no class of any kind. Perhaps it is or was his upbringing and a lack of discipline, but Jones' comments will serve him well in the future.

I like the players having an edge to them, but to flipping off fans, yell #*%@ you, is not an edge. It's immature and definitely shows a lack of respect for the great Sooners that have gone before him. He needs to learn to tone things down, shut up and play football. Park his ass on the bench for a game or two, If the Sooners drop a game because of it, make him own it.

Did anything happen when he made his crazy, cussing video? I don't believe it did. They can't be alright with that and now all the sudden have a problem. We all do things we shouldn't from time to time right wnas?

That's twice (that we know of) he has went off on a rant. It's in his DNA. He needs help and I hope that Stoops can assist. In two years, he'll be trying to make a make an NFL. It'll cost him financially when he goes off in the bigs.

Oh, and don't lay the crap 'He's human'. If you accept his behavior then it's own you. He was wrong. He could have said more and done more for his cause about the SEC at the press conference after the game. But chances are the team officials know he can't handle himself in a proper way.

It can become more than a single individual's problem. When someone is wearing a Sooner uniform, they represent the University. Sadly, as we all saw earlier in the year, even some frat boys on a bus can present the University in a very bad light. OU doesn't have a lot of leeway here, due to Dorial, Mixon, etc., so we don't need to be seen as having this as an "institutional" problem. Plus, when young kids are looking up to the players and see them acting like this, they think it's cool and will follow suit. It is time to talk to the individual players, but to emphasize how Sooners should be behaving, especially in front of a national television audience. As was seen on the "infamous" frat bus video, these days, there is always someone watching!
