STRICKER and BYRD

http://espn.go.com/college-football...ahoma-sooners-defensive-end-eric-striker-loss

I am glad we are standing up to some of our opponents, our players usually take a lot of crap from other players and are too passive at times. Butch was mad as hell at us last night and so were the fans, he should not say anything to any of our players.
I'm not an admirer of Striker as a team leader since his profanity-laced "speech" on the frat house incident earlier this year. You can call his antics last night "passionate" or whatever else, but he is not what I consider team captain material. Then again, Striker is just one more example of the contemporary athlete.....cocky, arrogant and strutting, and whose celebrations are boorish, childish and idiotic . Sportsmanship is at the lowest point I have seen in my 66 years.

What's less classy, a college kid showing his emotion after a unbelievable away win in front of 102,000 fans, or an adult coach of a team that just choked on the big one berating an opponents player? You are good coach, Butch, but grow up. You will be better for it.

Look at th the Texas high school players and coach that targeted the ref, that is not classy and is a criminal act..... I bet 95 percent of fans watching the Sooners were cussing and flipping the bird at the refs yesterday at home. Football is harsh and most of our fans and players are very classy.

Writer of that story is a Tennessee grad - sour grapes man. He's being a little bitch. Non-story here.

That said, I'm guessing Byrd is running this week - one thing to talk some trash, another to get caught flipping off fans.

I get that Butch was upset at the loss, but going after Striker was out of line. Striker did show some class by not responding to Jones's comment. I am okay that he is an emotional player and he was giving it back to the UT fans, just as they had been giving it to him all night long. I don't see why the players are so easily vilified for their behavior while fans can act like fools and talk trash for 3.5 hours. But if a player shows any excitement after a big win, they are low-class punks, etc.

When the Sooners did run to the end zone to maul Sanchez and celebrate their unbelievable win, some of the Sooners were taunting the fans with the "be quiet" gesture and throwing up their arms. But the Vols fans were booing and gesturing right back at them, so there was a lack of sportsmanship on both sides.

However, I do have an issue with Byrd flipping off the Vols fans and feel he should receive some level of counseling and/or wind sprints for his offensive gesture. I don't think the situation is so severe that he should sit out the Tulsa game, but flipping off or taunting opposing players, coaches and fans is the ultimate in poor sportsmanship. I understand he may have lost his cool in the moment of celebration and/or heard something from a fan that set him off, but I feel his unsportsmanlike gesture should not go unpunished.

High octane football is an extremely emotional battle for the players. I could not even begin to put myself in their shoes. They do have a lot to deal with...some handle sportsmanship better than others. I am glad to see the Sooners fire up after seemingly being listless out of the chute. The roar of the Tenn crowd was loud, but the silence at the end was much louder (big grin).

Myself, I really don't have an issue with Butch Jones saying something to Striker. If the roles were reversed and we thought another teams player was acting like a punk and Bob Stoops said something to him....then we would prolly be on here applauding it.

Byrd flipped someone off and you want him to receive counseling? lol

For what its worth, I read where the UT fans were taunting OU players going into the tunnel at half time. I think there is much more to this story than just the few minutes after the game was over.

Yep, that's plausible.

TBCH I thought Striker and Butch both behaved like asses...both are adults and should know better. Striker is a heckuva player...he should have just walked off the field and allowed me to maintain my perceptions of him. Butch is the head coach of our program...he knows better.

How ya doing Jake?
Have you found your center yet?

FWIW, we've been there and done it. Sucks.

Well it hurts still but I'll get over it...I'm sure if the shoe was on the other foot you would feel the same way. Great game...great atmosphere...you would have had to have been there. I hate losing games and then spend time looking back at the little things we could have done to have won...a missed catch here or a made fg...those things eat at you. Great win for you guys...

I'm so happy and I have no complaints about the team. Great program building win.
We have some posters that dig deep to find something to whine about. I considered it the biggest win since 2000. Kids being emotional in that environment? I loved it all.

Well I am ashamed of some of our so called "fans" today. I am disappointed for sure and felt Butch and staff could have done some things differently but I give a great deal of credit to OU. In the end players must make the P-L-A-Y-S when it most counts...your team did...ours didn't...my hats go off to you for sure.

I don't feel the need for any punishment, you can bet your ass Tennessee Players said and did more. I don't think Byrd just did that, I as m sure there is more to the story Butch was angry because we won. And what a heck of a game

If my son was Striker ....I would have appreciated Coach Jones complimenting him and also giving him some very good advice.

There were being called every name in the book by the student section and there were at least a thousand "birds" flying around. It was a mass of adrenaline and heartbreak. It was my understanding that Butch said that to Stryker before the game. If there is discipline that needs to be done I have full confidence in our coach to impose penalties or let it go based on his perspective..he was on that field too.

Classy fans, classless players
Classy fans my rear...they instigated the entire situation. I just wish our players had the maturity that each of us gained with age and experience. They are just kids and they didnt lay hands on anyone. Glad to see Mixon stayed out of it...it seems at least "he's" learned something.

For the most part Stoops players in the NFL are very classy and live that way. Peterson had his stint of problems.

These are young kids and they are going to do and say things that they shouldn't. We have all been guilty of that at some point. I'm sure Bob will have a talk with them if he feels its necessary.

I'll take a team full of Strikers and "The Boz" any day. This is not the venue for political correctness. It's a damn football game. Get over it

Jones' little talk with Eric was after the game, not before. I have a brief look at it on video. You can clearly see Jones saying the word "class" as Eric walks away from him. Bottom line, Butch Jones is strict on his players and coaches with a lot of fire, which I admire, but he was pissed after the game and that's why he told Eric what he told him. What is unclear is whether he deliberately sought Striker out or just happen to walk by him after shaking hands with Coach Stoops. Regardless, I just think that a coach doesn't have the right to preach to an opposing player. Reminds me of something that Woody Hayes would do. But that's just me.

After watching the video of Striker talking his smack after the game, he was yelling to and directing at the HS recruits that were at the game as guests of Tenn.

Byrd, on the other hand, flipping off the crowd, that's a whole other issue and I'm thinking he gets some type of Stoops discipline. It wouldn't surprise me that Boren calls Stoops to discuss this.

That's the proper source and it wouldn't surprise me that both players have already had a discussion with their coach. I hadn't heard about any report of Striker specifically directing his attention to UT recruits, but if that's the case, he was wrong and it most likely took place after Jones had made his comment to him. I think flipping off anyone in public while a member of a team is much more serious and I wouldn't have any issue with a suspension of some sorts. We really don't know what Striker was saying because he claims that he was talking to the OU fans....who knows.....but shooting someone the bone can't be explained away. Bad form in either case, IMO. My point is only an OU coach or administer has the right to scold the offenders personally.

yeah I saw it on the replay, Stryker didnt even look at him and proceed to head directly to the stands to take it up with the fans :)

Actually, he went directly to the recruits on visit and told them to come to OU and #*%@ the SEC. Seriously, he was talking directly to the visiting recruits. whether any of them take him up on it or not, I'd have no clue, but most likely the recruits somewhat enjoyed the attention.

Eh, Striker is a life force that, if he learns how to corral and control that energy, it will serve him well down the road.
You've got to remember these youngin's are 'in training' for life.
Got to give them a little space to develop.
If they cross a line of genuine propriety, then hammer down on them...but not until.

From the Big XII media conference call.

Stoops on players not being sportsmanlike. Asked to address...

Sure we do. They need reminded again, but obviously when you have inappropriate language gestures when they're in the heat of the moment immediately, with an intense game like that - - - It'll be dealt with internally and we're already working with them and teaching them on that kind of behavior.

========

I laughed when I read that. Bob is always understating things.

If I were a player, that's not the kind of teaching and being worked with, that I'd be looking forward to.
