He does have a point about OU's preseason ranking. But that's where it ends.

Why is it OU is a team with glaring holes and according to Mike Stoops, has no answers yet on finding the playmakers? Other teams lost exceptional talent and seem to be able to plug in a new guy who plays at a high level. Is OU really all that talented? Are they really that talented but poorly coached? Has Stoops become the new Mack Brown?

Going into this season, I could not figure how OU received such a lofty preseason ranking given what the team had lost from last year, Mayfield's health and a very tough early schedule. I felt that the so-called experts had not done their homework in overlooking the team's overall structure.
IMO, OU was a paper tiger talent wise. The first three games have reflected this.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; No excuse for not keeping the pipeline full when you've been there since 1999. Recruiting is a huge part of coaching. So put that aside for a minute and think about how many times in the past 10 years we've won against teams with equal, or close to equal talent. But I'm glad he makes sure that he and his staff spend plenty of time with their families.

OU was not the only team that lost quite a few players from last season, Ohio State had just 6 starters returning and we see what they did to OU. I never put any stock in preseason polls as they really only reflect on what you did last season.

I know what Ohio State lost from last year, but unlike OU, Urban Meyer is in a better recruiting environment than Stoops and can reload much more effectively and swiftly.....plus, forgive my blasphemy here, Meyer is a better coach these days than Stoops is and plays in a better conference which enhances the Buckeye's recruiting.

Yep, the prep numbers in Ohio are second only to Texas or Cali.
It's ridiculous the monster high school programs there.

Based on this article, and my gut, we can't expect to compete at a national level until 2018.
That's right, and this assuming the two classes 2017 and 2018 stay intact.
Just an opinion by another nobody fan...:)
I think competing for the next national championship has to start with relocating to another conference. OU's painted into a corner as a Big 12 member.

Over Ranked? Sure!

We didn't lose one player that can touch the first five players OSU lost. Sterling Shepard is the only player close to those guys. We need, WR's that develope. We need DLineman bad. We need Olineman Bad. We recruit a lot of DB's and WR but they are not living up to the recruiting and coaches hype. In the last five years, I think OU has had the most WR leave the program.

The article is well written and I understand his view. However to say none of the blame is on the coaching staff is a little over the top. This whole staff is the blame for the 2 losses because this team looked as clueless on the defensive side of the ball against TOSU as they did in the opener. As someone pointed out also in another thread, TOSU runs basically the same type of offfense as Houston with better players but it was like the coaching staff didn't even learn from the Houston game.

The article did get one thing right though.... Pre Season polls are useless.

September not even over and we're already in the "wait till next year" situation. It's been a long time since we have been in this situation. This season will drag on for a "long" time. I doubt we will be talking about Lincoln Riley leaving but my guess is that we will be talking about recruiting defections and rejections. If someone can point out something optimistic about OU football I would welcome your input.

I don't think there is any doubt that Urban Meyer is a better coach. Bob Stoops may have a loftier resume. But that's from the sheer length of his tenure. And yes I think at times being in the Big XII can work against OU in recruiting. The Big XII isn't seen as "big boy football" anymore.

As far as the article goes, I think it's a bunch of crap. I get what the writer is trying to say, but he ignores that having lofty expectations every year is what OU football is about. Even if OU had started the year ranked #25, the losses to Houston and Ohio State would be just as embarrassing and hard to swallow for most OU fans.
And let's be honest here, Bob Stoops set the standard for lofty expectations in his first 10 years or so at OU. So if he is now failing to meet the standard he set when he first got to OU, then he needs to look himself in the mirror and see if he truly has the desire to do what he did in 1999 when he first got here. If he doesn't, then it's time for him to hang it up.

There's zero doubt the recruits had one hell of a time. Despite the loss, the experience was awesome. OU knows how to put on a show.

I believe there are recruits that see early playing opportunity at OU. That is often a big deciding factor.

Bob and brother need to reevaluate their defensive scheme. Striker is no longer here as a dependable pass rusher. The 3 DL scheme without size at LB seems to be ineffective against a quality run game. OSU pushed our DL and LB all over the field.

I have no idea what Riley's offense is. It looks like Heupel's without the meerkat. Where are the quick passing patterns? The misdirection worked well against OSU's defense, but they only called a few. It seems the OU passing game has a lot of slow developing routes.

I'm by no means a football guy, but last night, just like against Houston, Baker left the pocket way too early and caused breakdowns in his protection. There's no way an OL can effectively block for a QB who bails almost immediately as they can't see what he's doing.

Exactly! Ohio state filled in their holes quite nicely!!

Yep...Ohio State returned JUST 6 STARTERS from last seasons team, and their young/inexperienced players just completely whipped OUs players last night. Don't think that leaves ANY illusion as to which coaching staff is doing a better job at developing and preparing their players for their time on the field.

And even more depressing, is with Ohio State being the youngest and least experienced team in all of college football right now, that means literally the entire team that kicked OUs ass last night will be on the field again next year when OU goes to Columbus. That team that kicked the shit out of OU last night will be scary with a full season of experience under it's belt....

Not bad for someone who's "not a football guy". Speaking of "football guys", we seem to be missing one or two.
