I do not want to name the player but he stayed 4 years and is finishing up his rehab and working out so he can hopefully get signed by an NFL team. He didn’t breath fire when talking about Mike. In fact he might even like him personally. He did say that the game passed Mike by. Most defensive formations have their strengths and weaknesses. For example, a dime package is great at stopping the passing game but is vulnerable to the run. It got to a point where Mike didn’t care about offensive tendencies. The defense can narrow down what an offense will run by watching film and know what the offense runs out of each formation and down and distance. He said Mike would be obsessed with any weakness of the defenses formation. Even in obvious running situations Mike would be scared to death about the mismatches. For example, if his outside LB couldn’t cover a slot or TE Mike would freak out regardless if it 3rd and 2 or 3rd and 20. With the pass happy Big XII, Mike had no answers.

The ex player also said that if OU played against a team that played well against OU’s offense the week before that Mike would try to copy it the next week and incorporate it in OU’s defensive game plan. The defense didn’t have enough time to perfect it and would often be confused on game days.

He was also in the locker room at the OU Texas game that Mike got fired. He said he didn’t see anything out of the ordinary but could have missed something. He didn’t try to connect the dots but it made me think that Mike’s days were numbered and that Lincoln was looking for any reason to get rid of Mike. Lincoln was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He had a loyalty to Bob but knew that as long as Mike was there that it would be damn near impossible to win a National Championship with Mike running the defense.
