as "losers" by Bleacher Report.
Clearly OU lost some good players.....but OU also "lost" a coach who is as deceitful as he is overrated.
And since Riley has left, Venables has taken charge and restored calm and stability to the program.
I do not believe any of us, knowing what we know now since Riley's exit, are unhappy with the new direction of this team.
The best revenge is doing well. OU is doing well.

We lost a lot of talent and potential. Only Rattler had significant production. Caleb had some good TD numbers in a half season but yards and % numbers weren't staggering.

Mario and Hazelwood were not more productive than what we returned, Wease and Mims. Not even close.

Stogner wasn't the same guy after 2020.

We lost some good players. But it's way way too early to even grade the portal transfers because you can't do that until we all see what the outgoing players do next season for their new teams and for Sooner fans what the incoming players do for OU. What I think that should be said is that Bleacher report doesn't see is that some of these guys were head cases as well. We can only trust that BV didn't bring in the same as replacements.

Bottomline, the proof will be in the pudding. Show me what you got BV.

I'm looking past the portals, both the losses and the gains.
Venables has already shown his worth and he's only just begun. That's not to say that OU won't have some ups and downs this year with all the changes that must be made and have been made. There has to be some time given to fully restore OU's reputation. Riley's influence has to be overcome for OU to start playing smart, physical football. I believe OU chose the right man to make this happen.
I expect the team this year to improve as the season goes on....something none of us saw last season.

I could be wrong but I think 247 Sports has OU as scoring 5th best in transfer portal trade activity. They weigh the outbound against the inbound. I believe Bleacher is only totaling the outbound. By that measure I have no doubt OU lost the most talent.
Agree. Let's see what Venables recruits through this week. I think there will be some more good talent coming in, with or without Dart.

I still believe Jim MacKenzie did a super coaching job when he won 6 games his only year as head coach. He turned around the program. All I want from Brent is to set the foundation for future success. I’m not expecting a miracle next year. Saban didn’t flip the switch at Alabama immediately but he did make progress. That’s what I’m hoping for from Brent. I think he’s got the staff to make it happen.

Bob Stoops resurrected OU in 1999 with a 7-5 record and laid the foundation for a national championship a year later as well as a Hall of Fame career.
Bob took OU on a trajectory similar to what Saban did at bama. We got one and played for three others. Bob was thorough and consistant throughout his term as COACH OF THE OKLAHOMA SOONERS!

I was talking to Mickey Ripley at the end of the 1999 season (before playing Ole Miss). Mickey said the underlying reasons for the 4 losses were easy fixes. He told me that OU would only lose one game in 2000. He thought OU would lose to Nebraska in the regular season. Mickey thought Stoops was a perfect fit for OU.

By the end of the 1998 season, I was concerned that OU was done as an elite team and would fade into mediocrity with maybe an occasional bowl appearance now and then.
Bob Stoops assembled a great coaching staff, as McKenzie did in 1966, and put OU back into greatness very quickly.
Venables appears to be following the same path even though he’s inheriting an 11-2 team…but one that’s been diminished by early exits and defections in the wake of Riley’s gutless flight to the land of fruits and nuts.

Lot of close road losses in 1999. As a team we just weren't ready to be winners. That changed in the off-season. The confidence came and the knockout of Texas set things in motion.

We let wins against Notre Dame and Texas slip away in 99 but then destroyed Texas A&M.

Coaching and Recruiting are often Under-Rated...Number of Stars on a player is of little value if they don't have direction and learn ways to use their talents...We got a first hand example of that this season. I was sitting there, watching Bedlam, and remarked that OUr Team looked like the same team that took the field Opening Day...I saw little, or, in some cases, No Improvement!

I think one could argue that Texas was out of our league in 1999. We jumped all over them in the first half, but their gap in talent and conditioning was large. I'm not sure we would have beat them even with an easy fix. I think even the OU coaches have kind of admitted that since then. Leach dropping the fake playbook in warm-ups is accepted as the main reason we were able to jump all over them in that first half. Once they woke up and realized what had happened, they pretty much started man-handling us.

I always wonder what that 1999 season would have looked like if De'mond Parker had stuck around and given Stoops one year. That would have been a game-changer on those 4 losses, but it also sounds like he was a fan of the John Blake system of "No Accountability." All the talent in the world and none of the drive to work hard.

My take on the off season between 1999 and 2000 could be completely off target but it seems to me that Stoops moved players around both on O & D to where he had square pegs in square holes and round pegs in round holes. He got the best out of his players by putting them in the best position to succeed and win.
I believe you are right on target. Under Bob's watch, I don't think I've ever seen so many kids switch positions from one side of the ball to the other and be outstanding. 👍
