With Oklahoma adding Ben Arbuckle to the staff as the new Offensive Coordinator, we can only assume the next shoe to drop will be John Mateer transferring to Oklahoma.
The numbers for him look great but when you watch the film, the youngster is a playmaker and exactly what OU needs right now.
First off, he plays with an edge. Oklahoma needs a defined leader who will step in and make plays from day one. Mateer will do that.
His feet/pocket awareness are better than all of OU’s current QB’s. I don’t even think it’s close. A lot can be attributed to quality coaching from Arbuckle, however…
The physical traits are undeniable.
He plays with a lower center of gravity, which I love. Think Baker & Kyler. This allows for better burst, elusiveness out of the pocket.
He has strong legs, mobile hips. He gets in and out of cuts extremely easy. One of the areas that I thought JA struggled with was lateral quickness and Mateer makes you realize the elusiveness that OU has missed in the pocket in order to extend plays.
