Back in the week before the Sooners played Clemson, the daughter of Sooner line coach from the Fairbanks days, Bill Michael, came and hung out on the site both to encourage us to beat her alma mater's instate rival, and to let us know her dad was dealing with cancer again in his life.

Coach Michael died yesterday, peacefully in his sleep, a week past his 81st birthday. I worked for Coach Micheal for three years. Quality man, and coached the 1971 Sooner OLine which was one of the best in school history. They rushed for 5, 635 yards in only 12 games.

If you'd like to send a card to his daughter, contact me on the site's PM.

Sorry to hear of Coach Michaels passing. I sent him a card prior to the Orange Bowl to wish him a Happy Birthday. May God bless and protect his soul.

Question Plaino....what do you know of the probation on OU following the 1972 season ? Was Texas the main whistle blower as some have speculated ? Was the penalty too harsh or appropriate ? Was Coach Michael more of a "fall guy" than he was a guilty party ?
It has always bothered me that three of the best teams in OU history were denied TV coverage from 1973-1975.
A female reporter in Houston (Anita Martini), sometime during the mid-70's, was chastised for speculating that Texas was a "satellite school" for the NCAA and that UT received preferential treatment by the NCAA for turning up violations by other schools.

I have always thought Coach Michael was an innocent bystander in a scheme perpetrated by Galveston Ball H.C. Joe Wooley to change Kerry Jackson's transcript. At least I would like to think so. I know this, had Jackson played a full career at OU, he may have been as good as we have ever had at QB.
