RB Breakdown
In theory going into 2023, OU should have 3 scholarship RBs in Marcus Major, Jovantae Barnes, and Gavin Sawchuk. So at a minimum OU needs one every down feature back, ideally 2 more RBs for the RB room. OU’s RB recruiting seemed locked into two verbals from Tre Wisner and Dylan Edwards. A quick verbal from Edwards this spring and then Wisner committing to OU in October as planned. He almost verbaled to OU in October 2021. Now Wisner is a Whorn and OU seems to be in 4 way fight for Edwards that might get resolved this summer?

No Verbals.
Offers with no sign of interest in OU
Cedric Baxter, Justice Haynes, and Reuben Owens (complete non starter) are top 50 backs with OU offers in some manner but no signs of any interest in OU. Baxter would be a great power back addition. Haynes is a UGA legacy but again would look great as a Sooner. Owens?? who knows where he is going.
Former OU verbal Treyaun Webb is also not looking at OU.

OU is the top Four/Five for
  • Dylan Edwards 5-7, 170 Kansas Four Star - Perhaps it’s the collective Sooner PTSD from the 2003 Big 12 title game that has so many OU fans desperate to get Edwards and not see him at KSU. He’s an excellent small back with good receiving skills. Oregon appears to have joined KSU as the main challengers here. The only downside with Edwards is you need a bigger back to go with him.
  • Daylan Smothers 5-11, 190, Charlotte Four Star Top 300 - OU looks to be in the top five for Smothers and receiving an official visit this summer. He’s more of an all round back than Edwards. His most recent highlights posted on 4/22 are his best. He looks faster with better homerun speed, more decisive in his cuts. Looks more explosive, flashing some power.
Wildcards from Florida
  • Richard Young 6-0, 190 Florida Five Star - Is he the best RB in the class? HIs junior film is fantastic. Does OU have any real shot? Well he visited unofficially and an official visit is supposed to occur in June. If Bama gets Baxter, and UGA gets Haynes, then maybe OU can beat out tOSU for Young?
  • It might be a longshot, but OU has hovering around this recruiting for nearly 2 years now. Demarco could pull out a huge win. This could be one of these battles where OU stays in it long enough and gets a win.
  • Christopher Johnson JR 5-11, 180 Florida Three Star - A recent offer by Coach Murray. His junior film is very good. A smaller back with excellent quickness and acceleration. Shows good long speed. Not sure you can have a RB class of Edwards and Johnson.
The 2023 RB class had already gone through twists and turns. First, Owens looked like a Sooner, then shifted to UT. OU got a huge verbal from Webb who then disappeared like the other TBOW offensive verbals after the coaching change. Ideally OU grabs Young and Edwards. You get an excellent specialty back in Edwards and the future feature back in Young. If Edwards chooses some place else and Young never returns to Norman. I’m not sure where OU’s focus is after that. Smothers would probably be up next. If Young choose Bama or tOSU could OU find themselves back in the race with another top back?
