Portal Questions for the experts

So say a guy has entered the portal (Alton Tarber for instance) does that mean his scholarship is over come January? Has he relinquished his right to come back in January?

What if he doesn't get plucked out of the transfer portal until April?

Can he come back and just be a student for the spring semester?
