Packing them in...

A seemingly KU like attendance in Birmingham watching Taco Tech and South Florida in a pillow fight. Obvious need is to reduce the number of sub bowls.

I love college football and bowl season, but I agree there are way too many bowls. I would like to see the NCAA step in and say 6-6 teams don't get a bowl. That will cut out a few games. I also think the sponsors of those eliminated bowls should join up with the other bowls and provide bigger payouts to the schools and more swag for the players.

But, it appears as though there are too many sponsors willing to lay out big money to attract 15,000 people to a televised bowl game.

There are too many bowls, but....
1) the bowl system in general is a huge money-maker for networks and the teams that participate.
2) teams participating in bowls get 15 extra practices after the last regular season game and that's a huge bonus to college coaches.
As I once stated, it's my opinion that a bowl team should only be eligible if it wins at least 7 games and/or has a record that would give a team a winning record overall even if it lost its bowl game. That would remove at least 15 teams from bowl worthiness....and in 9-game winner South Florida's case today vs. Texas Tech, give the Bulls a better opponent that a 6-6 Red Raider team.

The numbers of bowls is absurd. I think total there are 80 teams playing in bowls this year. 38 bowl games, plus the 4 teams in the playoffs. FBS has a total of 130 football schools. So nearly two-thirds of all FBS schools are going to bowl games. That's why some bowls have garbage attendance. It's because going to a bowl game these days isn't a big deal like it use to be. It's the "everyone gets a trophy" mentality.

It’s also about money.
And as I said, teams should have to win a minimum of 7 games. That would cut the number of bowl games in half.
Now I’m getting back to a very good Army-San Diego State game, tied at 21-21.
