Yes, if we had a staff full of Montys and we were able to expand our support staff like Alabama has, we'd do better in Texas recruiting, and really throughout the country. However, our league is still viewed as soft and not as attractive as the SEC, B1G or Pac 12. ACC is debatable, but they are situated in the most fertile recruiting ground in the country for the types of kids that we all want--big, physical, nasty linemen in particular.
For whatever reason, California kids have consistently been fans of OU and much more willing, on average, to leave the state than kids from the South. That would only improve if we moved to the Pac 12. I realize the time zone issue is not ideal, but would you rather wallow in the mediocrity of the Big 12 or deal with the time factor?
I think Riley, Gundy, Cooks, Reynolds and both Bob and Mike are all above average to excellent recruiters (Mike is hit or miss). We can do better than Boulware and Kish. We need at least one or two monster recruiters like Monty.
I'm not sure what would realistically have to happen to facilitate a move to another conference, but if we're going to do it, I think the Pac 12 would give us the best overall chance to get to the playoff annually and truly have a chance to win it once we're there.
