OU softball - where to watch

Ironically this next weekends showdown with unbeaten South Carolina are all SEC plus broadcast. Let’s hope they bring in some extra camera angles.

If I did notice something more alarming this recent series of games wasn’t exactly fan supported and one would think local OU fans would fill that stadium better. Maybe its the ticket prices, teams they are playing or people just have better things to do. If any sport at OU deserves fan support its softball and gymnastics. Basketball ( Mens) I get the lack of fan interest.

I wonder where OU home game attendance this year is compared to other SEC teams. I tried finding it but came up empty

As far as softball, remember that our stadium seats more than double than almost any other on campus stadium in the country. So there are going to be empty seats. And a large percentage of the seats, especially what you see behind the plate on the broadcast, are season ticket holders. I don't know the percentage, but most in the stadium have season tickets. When there are five or six games on the weekend, especially against teams who drop fly balls, and have short depth in their pitching staffs, not everybody is going to get to every game. I believe all the tickets are sold for the season. And I don't know if every softball fan knows how easy or difficult it is to get a ticket to a game.

I have been to more games at other sites in Texas, than I have in Norman. I've driven to OKC for the Big XII tournament, and got great seats. I've driven to Bayfor and paid for two days of motel rooms and got great seats, because I called their athletic office two weeks for the series, because I knew I could. I don't know how to get tickets for home games in Norman, and don't trust the lack of a paper ticket, because I'm old. I'm not making the 180 trip to Norman for one game. Coach McBride and I drove to Lubbock to see a three game series twice. We got great seats the first time. But having made the 300 mile trip, arrived at game one about the time it was ending, because they changed the game time for weather, and we had no way of knowing.

I can tell you that if I lived within 30 or 40 miles of Norman, I'd see every softball home game in decent weather and every women's home gymnastices meet, because of the excellence. But I don't think you can truly evaluate our fan support in person until we start conference games this weekend.

OU fans have not really enthusiasticly supported any sport with great attendance except football and softball. But even the students don't stay for the second half of football games. I'm embarrassed by that. And I believe it impacts recruiting. We have had the best damn gymnastics program in the country, with the best coach, and she begs to fill up LNC. There are a half dozen lesser teams in the SEC the do that routinely. What are there, 16 teams in the SEC? I suspect we're the bottom three in men's basketball attendance. And it would be that way even if we had a better record. Except for football and softball, we don't sell out anything with any regularity. It's just the way it is.

Good post. I live 5 hours away and can relate to what you say. With that being said when I attend football games ( try twice a year ) I usually get my tickets through VetTix that are not only very cheap ( they are donated by season ticket holders for veterans) when they can’t attend the games themselves. In continous of that, softball and gymnastic season ticket holders have never contributed to VetTix for those events or I would be attending a great many games.

I do wonder though why a season ticket holder who knows they are not attending would not want those seats filled by either selling those tickets at face value or donating to an organization like VetTix to get butts in the seats. I know I would if I had them and lived near Norman

Getting tickets to Loves field can be had via ticket agencies but at very jacked up prices. My wife and I was going to origionally attend the OU-Ark series in Fayetteville but burm tickets to sit in the grass ( yes in the grass) were like $89 and chairbacks $120 plus. That is rediculous on any level for a softball game.

The SC series this weekend should see more fans, at least I hope it does but I still wonder how attendance thus far stacks up against other SEC teams. As for basketball, I can’t even watch them on TV, no way I would drive even if I got a free ticket snd there are plenty to be had on VetTix. That is unwatchable basketball.
