The database’s total of million-dollar assistants was 12 in 2016 and nine and 2015. This year it will be at least 18, including the first two coaches – LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda($2.5 million) and Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables ($2 million plus incentives) – to crack the $2 million mark.

Venables – whose total compensation in his new deal with Clemson is worth a record $11.6 million over five years – and Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando ($1.7 million) are million-dollar assistants from the ACC and Big 12, respectively. Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops ($950,000 with incentives) could also crack the seven-figure mark with bonuses, bringing the total to at least 19.
