Went to Laughlin NV this weekend for my B-day, something the wife and I had planned since Jan. when we bought tickets for the "Master of both space and time" none other than the Oklahoma Treasure Leon Russell! he was playing Fri. Sat. and Sun. at the Riverside casino. this would be my tenth time I've seen him live.
We chose the Saturday night show since we were staying till Monday and that would give us a day to recoup, since there would be alot of adult beverages invovled
flush.r191677.gif
. they told us we could either get a refund or try to get tickets for Sunday. at this point we are so bummed we go back to our hotel and drink are sorrows away.
Sunday we decide about twenty minutes before the show to see if we can get new tickets.(this is when then story starts not sucking) I go to the ticket booth and the lady gives me a pair of front row tickets and say's enjoy......... well this was the best show I've ever seen Leon put on. 2 hours of great music and to my amazment Leon talking about everyone he has ever played with from Glenn Campbell in the wrecking crew day's to George Harrison with the concert for Bagladesh. Joe Cocker, his day's at Mussel Shoales the album with Elton, he just went on and on......... it was awesome! all I can say is if you get a chance to see him, see him. He won't be here forever!

ps, Great, great story. Glad to hear it ended so well for you! Would love to see Leon again. I've only seen him once and it was in Tulsa, I think it was the summer going into my sophomore or junior year in high school. I can't remember if he played at the Tulsa Driller ballpark or at the Tulsa Raceway, but something tells me it was at Driller Park. Native Tulsan Dwight Twilley was the warm up act.

Wow, good for you.
Sounds like you salvaged a big ole drag into something you'll never forget.
Beings that Leon was from my hometown, Tulsa, saw him quite a bit over the years performing and randomly around these parts. Even got to hang out at his Church Studio in Tulsa one night. I think the drummer Jamie Oldaker was there.
(I don't remember it so I was definitely there..;)
Saw him at a strip mall in Glenpool once buying lumber from a hardware store.
As a guitarist I always liked his stuff in that I could match his singing range generally speaking.
My favorite songs of his probably would have to be Stranger in a strange land, Back to the Island, however most of his other stuff is just superb too.

Thanks for that good report dude!

Enjoyed reading about your experience pssooner. Thank you for posting.

(His song "Carney" is still one of the weirdest things I've ever heard. We used to laugh our arses off... with the help of a lot of beer of course).

Fitty,
My brother went to a party at his place at Grand Lake in the 70's and Jamie was there along with Carl Radle, George Harrison, Eric Capton and several others........... the only reason he remembers are the Polaroids

Schooner,
got to see him at the old Bee-line Meatmarket warehouse in Glenpool in the late 70's practicing for a tour that he was starting out in Tulsa at Cains. by the way you go to his webpage and see his dates, and he usually plays a couple times a year in ATL.

K2,
didn't the guy from Bread go there too? sorry got a brain cramp right now.... been a long weekend!
David Gates. He's on page two of the link. I think they missed several alum. I think Gary Busey, Buddy Holly Movie, Jeannie Tripplehorn, actress and brother of a local drummer from the Tulsa scene. There was also an actress from a tv sitcom in the 70's (Sorry can't remember her name) and I believe the long haired male screaming comedian that starred on Police Academy movies. I'm not sure about the above, but that's what I remember.

Yes. I was just remembered it and was getting ready to edit. Again, I'm not positive all of them went to Rogers, but I'm sure someone will correct me If I'm wrong. I had a first cousin(RIP) that attended Rogers during those glory years. He told some great stories. He was best friend to a former Sooner named Joey Grayson that played safety in the 60's.

I knew Gary's dad. He was in charge of real estate development for Safeway grocery in the early 70's in Tulsa. He told some of us in management to buy big time on any farm land in the 71st and Memorial area, as that would be the next big boom. I drove the dirt roads in the area and thought he was crazy. Man was I wrong...............

BTW, Peter Magowan, the owner of the SF Giants was our Division Manager. I played softball with him.
.

No, I thought I may have but checked the yearbooks & he must have been several years after. Hale was the 3rd biggest school in OK in the 70's with classes between 700 & 800 it was impossible to know everyone well unless you were part of the cliques.

Did you know Randy Hughes? One great Sooner from Hale.
Gary Busey and Mary Kay Place were Hale alums. Randy Hughes was a few years ahead of iasooner1 and I and David Vickers, who safety for Barry Switzer at OU was a few years behind our graduating class.

Oh yeah, and having glaucoma sucks.

I'm pretty sure Randy Hughes went to Memorial. I remember watching him play against Lawton High in the State Championship game in 1970 at Owen Field.

veritas, You speak the truth! Now that I think about it, I do believe that Hughes was not a Hale product, but did go to Tulsa Memorial.

Leon played the Toyota Stage at the Oklahoma State Fair two or three years ago. It was great to see him again.

The last time I saw him was in the 70's at the OKC fairgrounds arena. I think it was the Shelter People at the time. Leon could put on a show back then. I remember him setting at his Grand when he suddenly stood up, jumped up on the piano bench and then up on top of the piano where he strapped a Les Paul around his neck and ripped off a solo. All while I was watching through binoculars. Maybe it was the pre-concert activities but, I would have swore he was a god. Great concert.

The last time (State Fair) I saw him, he could hardly climb the steps to the stage. At the end, when it was time for an oncore. He said something like, "This is the part of the show where I leave the stage and you call me back for an oncore but if I do I may not get back up the steps, so lets pretend I left the stage and this is the oncore." He could still bang that piano though.

When I got out of the army in 73 there was a small beer bar/club type place on South Lewis...I believe it was called the Oasis or something like this. It was the height of the disco era and chaps like Clapton, Cale, Russell, the Bramlett's, etc were steady customers and often played at this little place on Saturday or Sunday afternoon's, rarely after 7 pm. They drove a Bently convertible that was hand painted by anyone and everyone that had a paint and brush handy. There was also a bar called Uncle Bentley's on about 61st and Sheridan that Cale often showed up. Boston Ave Market was another place that hosted impromptu music. Tulsa was the center of the world then.
