OC Lebby Confirmed by OU and also Ted Roof DC/LB Coach

So i guess the only left to hire is an outside WR coach and 1 or 2 secondary coaches. I'm hoping Malcolm Kelly from TCU gets the call as the WR coach.

Well the good thing I see about hiring Roof for the DC/lb Coordinator position is that Venables can rest easy knowing Roof will never be in contention to replace him as HC at some point unless OU wants a coach whose HC record is 6-45. Other than that I’m sure he’ll do fine as DC

Gomer Jones and Gary Gibbs were excellent assistant that were, as some assistants are, just not head coaching material.
Not sure he had the resources at Duke (2003-2007) that could spawn success. Academics probably was a factor as well. Duke is a basketball school that keeps the football program in the basement.

Roof may be the guy hand signaling the plays in but make no mistake,,,it's Brent's defense!!

So looked at defensive-minded head coaches, Smart, Saban, Aranda, and now Venables. They all have DC's smart and Saban have young up-and-coming coaches while Aranda has an older coach, like Roof. With the talent at OU, if we can get the kind of results Baylor did, then it will be a homerun hire.

We are extremely thin at OL and as far as I can tell we have no scholly TE/H-backs left (thx Lincoln, you putz). Love the film of this kid though - not just another tall kid who we split out despite the position title of TE - this guy is a blocking machine and trucks people when he has the ball in his hands.

Have to admit, I like the staff BV has put together.

The bar will be what Stoops and Riley accomplished, which is high, but I like this coaching staffs chances to meet or exceed that.

Seems like a kind of under the radar hire. Don't know much about him

Roof's head coaching record is 6-45. He was defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt in 2020. That year, Vandy finished 113th nationally in total defense. Hopefully, this is just a figure head hire, with Venables pulling the strings on defense.

One year at Vandy doesn't mean crap...

Gotta admit Roof is a headscratcher hire for me. Brents been killing it so far on hiring his staff but this one, well. I just don't know about this one. I guess its a wait and see like all will be. I have read where people are saying he might do the Defensive Signals but it will be all Brents Defense. On the flip side I have been told by some Ole Miss fans that was pretty much what Lebby was at Ole Miss but the Offense was all Lane Kiffins.
Not saying any of that is so but just what I have heard.

Apparently Roof was an analyst for Clemson in 2021 and I guess BV vetted him through that process. He may do fine I just thought in todays environment that he may make a bigger splash hire but like others have said hopefully this guy is just a mouthpiece for BV

Anyone think Roof will spearhead more analyst positions for us? I know BV has been known for studying teams and teams' signals.

Didn't he also win an NC as DC of Auburn?

Didn't the article that Medic linked mention how strong of a recruiting presence he has in the SE as one of Georgia Tech's best linebackers ever?

50% of this board was calling for Venables' head a decade ago. Probably me included, I don't remember my stance then. Even Venables stated he was too comfortable after he was at Clemson.

None of us are 100% on the job 100% of the time.

A head Coach is only as good as his assistants doing thier jobs correctly. Bob said a few days ago when asked about OU's downward trend on offense the past 2 seasons and he said something like it can happen and you don't really know it until it happens.
I think a lot of Coaches got complacent on Bobs staff yrs ago and we started to see that downward trend and may have contributed to his retirement. TBOW did spark the Offensive side of the ball but the Defensive side was abysmal. Hiring Grinch helped some but lets be honest it was still awful.
It happens, Coaches get Complacent and slack off doing their jobs, hopefully those that did and were Bobs that stayed on when TBOW took over are gone now.
Nick Saban has always preached Complacency, its when you get comfortable and take winning for granted. How does he keep his staff and players from being Complacent? Well his Staff is constantly raided so that could be one reason. He has hungry Coaches coming in like a revolving door, top recruits as well so maybe its stays fresh instead of getting stale. Or maybe he demands perfection all the time from everyone. I think I read where he said he knows it will never be perfect but thats not the point, you demand it anyway, strive for perfection.
I don't believe TBOW ever did such a thing nor did Bob a few yrs before he retired. You have to strive for Perfection from everyone and to win a Natty everyone has to be on board. It takes more than a good HC to win Natty's, it also takes a very good staff.

With only a few days until signing, will BV have a complete staff? The way I see it we still need a DL coach (interior) a secondary coach (corners) and a WR coach. Malcolm Kelly out of TCU as the WR coach would be a good addition.

I think Bob got complacent 5 or so years before retiring and then Riley came on board and, whether directly or indirectly enticed Bob to buy into the theory of who needs defense, let’s just try to outscore everyone. I think BV is intent on definitely putting an emphasis back on the fundamentals of defense first and foremost.

I can’t help but think BV doesn’t look at film of the Baylor game this year and just shakes his head seeing we gave up 300 yards rushing. If anyone has some time, they should check out the Clemson vs. Georgia game of 2021. Georgia won 10-3 I believe. Clemson’s offense has been poor this year but that Clemson defense held Georgia to a field goal and gave up a touchdown on a kick off or punt return. Point being, I’m ready to see some defense like that coupled with a high powered offense. That’s what we thought we were getting with Riley and Grinch.

i think Venables will be the type of D coach that believes his results will attract the recruits. I hope Riley took all his cheesy ass slogans with him and his embarrassing attempt at brisket that had all the inter webs cringing.

It was a long pick 6 by a UGA DB, which kind of accentuates you point even more.

This is worse than the Ruffin Mcneill hire imo. Never really understood that one and I definitely don't understand why BV would hire a mouthpiece. I'll just have to wait and see. I do have confidence in Venables to make this work.

Take a look at his resume and check out his work as a defensive coach and DC. His defenses have performed well overall. Roof has taken over DC duties that were in bad shape and improved them. He has been a Broyles candidate and won a national championship at Auburn as a DC. Working with Venables at Clemson is an advantage. I don’t think Brent hired him to be a mouth piece. I think he wants him to coach the aggressive style of defense Roof is known for. Riley didn’t know dick about defense so he hired his Tech buddy Ruffin. Brent knows defense.

I trust BV and although this isn’t a media storm or fan favorite hire I think we may be surprised. Yes he wasn’t a great HC but he isn’t the first cordinator to fail at that. Roof just may have us all praising this hire once it is all said and done by VB.

Our offense for much of the year was beyond bad. Our defense was responsible for at least 7 of our wins (it is a CFP level defense). That’s even having to work through an incredible amount of injuries. Game after game our offense would scratch together a few points and then ask the defense to bail them out. With all the talent that we’ve had here I’d say that this was the best coaching that BV ever had to do. Tough, smart, tenacious and suffocating. Mentally and physically. All BV needs is a DC who can implement his plans.

Hopefully we don’t have to sweat losing to the stripes next season because our D is just too mean for the mighty XII opponents…

Saw this on twitter yesterday.
Man he jumps from job to job a lot. I know a lot of assistants do but he changes jobs like Lebron James changes teams.

67, Nick Saban’s coaching staff change jobs regularly. His current staff has 5 that signed up during 2021, one 2020, 2 2019. His longest staff members have been with him 4 years. That’s kinda the way it goes nowadays.

He's definitely been busy. Not sure what to make of it yet though. He has done more than I was aware of however; the jury is still out!
