I'm beginning to think this week's game could turn ugly very quickly. The Texas team seems poisoned by infighting among the players with upperclassmen now calling out the younger players for a lack of a work ethic. Junior DB Dylan Haines said, "A lot of people are not preparing the way we should be preparing".
Coach Strong said Monday, "Everyday is a battle".
Having watched Texas play this year I see a team that is not focused, or at least, cannot maintain its focus during an entire game. I believe the talent on the Texas roster is better than the 1-4 record indicates. Much better. But somehow, the players don't buy into defending the Texas legacy and just don't seem motivated.
Maybe Strong needs to have a few more years to recruit his own players. I think Strong is a good coach and I do not compare him to John Blake in any way. His resume reflects he can coach and build a good program, but does the Texas brain trust feel the same way ?
I think an upset win Saturday will single-handedly save Strong's job for one more year, until the end of the 2016 season. A blowout loss to Oklahoma will likely hasten Strong's demise by season's end. UT's biggest games after OU are its last three games, at West Virginia, home against Texas Tech and at Baylor. It will be interesting see how Texas represents itself in those final games. Losing to OU and then losing the last three games could end Strong's tenure once and for all.
