Kicking?

Anyone know who is going to fill some mighty big shoes, with Seibert gone? That kid was money........
The kid with a funny last name from Ohio. He better be good. Punting is the other kid from Texas with a funny last name. WS

I don't recall any OU team in this century having kicking game issues.
Somehow, someway, I have to think 2019 won't be any different.

Stevens scored 306 points, made 42 of 52 field goals, 180 of 188 extra points. He's 11th on OU's all time scoring list.
He might be missed.

Stevens had limited range, & a couple of his boots looked uglier than a Phil Niekro knuckleball, but say what you want to say about it, his kicks usually found their way between the goalposts.

I always did like him. All that matters is that you get the FG. I just can’t help but remember the look on Bob Stoop’s face when he kicked that squibbler barely over the bottom post against FSU. One of the posters used to have that as his profile pic. haha!

What ctokie conveniently left out was OU had to be in his "range" and his range seemed to be limited. Anyone remember cordero Moore grabbing Stevens on the sidelines?

I never watched an OU game during Stevens' time (2008-2011) in which his lack of range or overall kicking ability cost his team a game. He hit on 81% of his FG's or about the same percentage as Siebert (79.7%). And for the record, Siebert was great kicker and punter who trumped many solid Sooner kickers.
But getting back to this season's kicking game, no one knows what Brkic will do....but 7 of his 10 successful FG's in high school were from over 40 yards.
Mundshau was recruited for his punting.

This. And sometimes it altered the decision process of whether to kick or not.
Stevens' lack of range came to light in the 14-13 loss to BYU in 2009.
Tress Way, a true freshman who was the team's punter with a stronger leg and size (6'1" 220 lbs) attempted a 54 yard FG that went wide left in the closing seconds. I don't see how Stoops had any other option.

Not sure what surprised me the most with this post? The fact that somebody held OU to 13 points or the fact that the OU defense held an opponent to 14 points.

That was actually the last time OU fielded a top 10 defense:

The biggest problem(s) that year were Bradford & Gresh getting injured, & an absolute turnstile on the O-line thanks to the most injuries I've ever seen hit one unit. Trent Williams played center in the Sun Bowl that year & I remember reading an article stating that he was the 5th different player to snap the ball that season.

Bradford's injury in the first half and TE Gresham's absence due to a preseason injury had everything to do with that....much more so than anything to do with the kicking game. The 2009 Sooners were riddled with at least 10 key injuries throughout the season.
