If you don't like Mike's sideline demeanor or his coaching style that is fine but let's talk about his defense LAST YEAR and not previous years, no not even WVU.
They gave up the lowest point total really against TCU ( Minnesota held them to 30 early) I don't count Trevor's pick six against him. TCU scores 58 on Baylor and 48 on Texas and 42 on Ole Miss. KSU got a whopping 385 yards and 24 points. The defense didn't lose those games ( TCU,KSU, and OSU). Bob lost OSU with his massive brain fart and the pick six and Hunnicutt's misses and our inability to convert short yardage doom KSU.
So let's forward to Baylor. We jump out on Baylor 14-3. Baylor scores to make it 14-10. We then give them 7 with a Knight for all practical purposes a pick six. We go down 17-14 after a 14-3 lead.Baylor went 4 and out to start the game and got a first 10 on the 12 and only got 3 points the next series. The next series they punt. Doesn't sound like nothing but an excellent start to me. Wonder how many teams held them to 3 points their first 3 drives? Then we throw a near pick six and they score from the one to take the lead 17-14. That is not on Mike. They then get the ball back and we get a roughing the kicker on fourth down or now we are successful of giving up only 1 TD in 5 possessions. We end up getting them to another fourth down which they convert what turns out to be a 16 play 80 yard drive and overcome a roughing the kicker and a fourth down 4th and 4.
I think the team loses confidence. We are up 14-10 and give up a pick six really and then a 16 play 80 yard drive aided by a roughing the kicker and several third down conversions and a fourth down conversion. Then Petty comes out with 9-9 to March down the field on our prevent defense to start the third to give Baylor a 31-14 lead.
To me it looks like the defense has lost confidence in the offense and QB and the defensive coordinator doesn't seem to be the guy to help them get it back about themselves.
The defense is sure not responsible for the OSU loss. As far as Clemson the offense goes 3 and out the first two series and then on the fourth series after an interception by Knight in the third series Knight throws a pick six. So the defense is frustrated with the offense and one of their own for a busted coverage to give up a TD on their first play.
I really think the defense suffered a massive self confidence factor and determination deficiency that Mike's coaching style wasn't helping. Bob Stoops realizes it and makes a change at OC to a guy whose offense is friendly to the QB and has put points on the board.
The secondary was the least confident group and they get rid of Mike in their ear and get a very positive coach to coach them this year.
Food for thought. I am beginning to think if the defense can get their mojo back and keep it they may be alright.
