I think almost every Sooner fan I know is in agreement that Mike's departure was long overdue. There was a collective sigh of relief with the announcement of his decision to leave the program. It should have happened after the Rose Bowl, but even though it was done mid-season, I'm okay with it as it probably comes at a good time with the bye week to give the coaches an extra week to get their plans in place.

For years, I've been hearing many Sooner fans also say that the Big 12 Conference needs a strong Texas program to give the conference more credibility. In the last two days, I've heard talking heads on ESPN and CBS Sports Radio proclaiming "Texas is back!" And to their credit, after losing to Maryland, the horns have put together a nice run with wins over USC, TCU, OU while struggling against KSU and Baylor (Ehlinger hurt his shoulder in the first half and Buchelle came in to direct the win).

So, with Mike's departure and Texas's resurgence, there should be lots of joy and happiness in Soonerland.

Mike should have been gone a long, long time ago. Bob should have manned up and sacked his brother when the defense was getting their ass whipped all day long, year in and year out. I don't care that it was his brother. I would not have hired my brother knowing that he did not have a clue how to coach.
I blame the BOR more than I do Bob, on that one. IF the story I get is true, they WAIVED the Nepotism Clause, in order to allow Mike's hiring. That Clause was in place to prevent this exact Scenario, IMO...

He was Bob's baggage. If you wanted Bob, (which OU did) you took Mike too. It'd be interesting to hear if this is why Iowa did not offer Bob as he left their interview w/o an offer.

Should have been left in Lubbock 2016. It kills me that the 100+ year old NCAA record was set against OU. If that wasn't enough to fire him, Bob was never going to.

He's not a bad guy but completely sucked as a Defensive Coordinator.

His stubbornness and attitude left me with no sympathy for him and he should have been axed with Josh and Jay.

As for Texas, I'm not sold. The conference is down and they haven't shown any offensive explosion against anybody but us. Don't think it will happen, but we need them to win out and get them back in the conference title game.

Sorry people, I just can’t get onboard with a strong Texas. Not only do I hope they lose every game, but I also hope a sinkhole opens up under Austin and swallows it in one giant gulp. Gawd, IDE rather lose to KU than those arrogant a holes down south. Just call me jaded ;)

I don't think OU has a nepotism policy. If they do, it is recent. A friend arranged a lunch afew years back with Tommy Tubbs. Tommy made mention that the reason he did not follow Billy (and got out of coaching) to TCU was TCU's nepotism policy. Billy was not allowed to hire him at TCU. But, they worked together at OU.

Texas may not "be back" as far as being an elite program right now, but given the overall weakness of the Big12, Texas, or any other Big 12 team, does not have to be an elite team in order to be the best team in the conference.
Only thing now that can make OU's 2018 season a memorable one is to win the rest of its games, win the conference championship, and win a bowl game.

I agree. Unless there is a BIG improvement defensively, OU fans should be content playing in a good bowl against a worthy opponent and winning. One dimensional teams should never be a final four team. But that’s just me.

I had an interesting convo with an old friend, last night. He graduated from T Tech, and has had a successful coaching career in the Houston area. He knows Ruffin, and says that he believes, that based on his track record at TT and Carolina, he can get the job done. It was encouraging and so is the fact that our Bye Week gave us an additional opportunity for practice, practice, practice. As Bear Bryant said...That gives you the opportunity to put it to good use in a game situation...Go Sooners!

Total Defense Rankings of teams Ruffin's been a part of:

Average at Tech = #48
Average at East Carolina = #68 (#57 if you throw out that first year egg)
Average at Oklahoma = #80

At Oklahoma, we are now hoping to play defense like East Carolina and Texas Tech.

Big XII this year:
TCU #16
Iowa State #18
West Virginia #35
Kansas #65
Texas #78
Oklahoma #79
Texas Tech #89
Oklahoma State #97
Kansas State #103
Baylor #106

I guess they are trying to say that Texas is back to the national championship level they had there for a couple of years? I say no way. They have an average qb, a couple of good receivers, one back, and a defense that might be just a little above average. Typical blow things way out of propertion Texas hyperbole.

Stoops was 9 months overdue. But better now than more sh**.

Big 12 the strongest it’s been right now on paper since the realignment for sure, and yes Texas getting “back” was the final piece. My Cats being down this year isn’t helping anyone but we’ll be much better next year.

It’s right now the #3 football conference and a TCU-Buckeyes win away from #2 by all accounts. It was #5 3 yeas ago so let’s be glad for improvement.

People like the guy two posts earlier jock the Big 12 bc there’s 10 teams but people need to realize quality is better than quantity a la Big 8. Big 10 and ACC have watered down their (football) conferences so much adding Rutgers, Maryland, Pitt and Syracuse. Basketball has helped them adding those teams, but football hurt.

Real time RPI actually has the Big 12 at #2 via cold

Bottom line is that Mike Stoops is gone.
Let’s move forward. Not rehash the same old BS.
I for one am really looking forward to seeing what RM and Diaco do in turning around the defense.
I think we’re going to see vast improvement.
