I think the lesson taught at OU was you can't use racial slurs at a fraternity or you get sent packing. I'm good with it.

I am glad you posted this, Gramps. I read this earlier, and I totally agree, that there is a lot of good stuff there. That is not to say I don't agree with the steps President Boren has taken, but she makes some great points.

Good lordy, that is all we need is more hand holding and coddling of these kids. If these kids didn't/don't learn their lesson from this incident then it is their fault and surely not Boren or Stoops fault. The fallout for them because of their thoughtless actions will educate them or they will never learn.

This sounds just like an egghead answer to every issue and he is dead wrong in being critical of the way Stoops and Boren handled this situation.. On of this nation's biggest problems is the eggheads who populate the Ivory Towers of our educational institutions and think they have all the answers. These kids knew what they were doing. This wasn't some isolated or unfortunate incident. They were just acting out what they think. Hopefully, they will learn a very important lesson. Having to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and get back on the horse and find their way will have a positive impact on their future.

What this guy is suggesting is just another variation of the punishment Boren and Stoops gave them. His idea is simply humiliation and believe me they are likely feeling pretty humiliated at the moment. I am guessing that mom and dad aren't to supportive of their actions. How would you like to be mom and dad living in some small community and have your son and daughter come home disgraced by their participation in this incident.

I have no sympathy for the culprits. I do hope they learn from this and decide to get their thinking straightened out and find a way to be productive citizens as we surely need more of them.

Actually Roy, this was written by an African American women. I don't think what she was suggesting is coddling, I think it is advocating a way to change hearts forever. Meeting with the cook who made your food, might very well teach them a better lesson and make them better citizens, in the long run. I think President Boren did what he had to do and I totally support him. I also think her voice, as a teacher and a person of color, adds a lot to the discussion of promoting ways to heal and educate on a human to human level! Their was a lot of great discussion, in the comments after her article!!

Once again, the solution to this is presented as a one way street, and the solutions that view it that way are meaningless.

There is this notion, especially on the liberal left, that this is strictly a problem with white folks and that just is not the case. But because the left thinks they have the only views that matter, then meaningful discussion is unlikely to take place anytime soon.

There is the assumption that any white guy who finds problems with how black culture functions is either racist or meaningless. It's not surprising that the same crap, would include a reference to "homophobes" because in their view, if you don't line up lock step that gay is just different and gay marriage is a constitutional right then you are deserving of any name calling. It is the exact sin they are leveling when the N word is viewed as the sin so unforgivable that even your house mates who had nothing to do with the name calling deserve having a day to go find a new place to live with zero due process. The hypocrisy of that view is that these are usually the same people that would scream about the unfairness of a serial killer not receiving due process.

I do think there is a little in what the lady has to say, but very little. A teachable moment it surely was. And a calling for something besides just a hand wringing and expulsion to move on has great wisdom. But her specific teaching in the teachable moment is sorely lacking. That is not surprising.

This issue is seen exclusively as a probelm of white folks, especially mostly non liberal white folks. That is myopic. And so long as all the solutions are that way, not much progress is going to occur.
