If I were West Virginia

I recognize that this is a hypothetical question. I'd have issues w/ it. For a couple of reasons. I'll get to those in a bit. I don't see the logic with any player that is playing in the playoffs doing this. The NFL Owners, GMs, Coaches, and scouts would in most cases score this 'against' the player. Quitting when a play or a game that is on the line and at the most critical point of the player's career would be a deterrent in the selection process.

Now to the two reasons...
1. Because he's played every game this season while already under a professional baseball contract. The reasoning would not be sufficient.
2. There is still a title to play for, i.e.
College Football National Title > Doritos' Citrus Bowl Title

Fair enough. Now, what about the two captains at Michigan who opted not to play in a top ten match up against Florida? Point is, where do you draw the line? For me, it doesn't matter whether it's for a championship or for a chance to just have a winning record; you're either a team guy or you aren't.

I recognize that my view is not the most popular as a fan. But I'm one that thinks the players, and the coaches are much closer to the game than the fans and as a result, they understand the reasoning. I'm not sure who these specific players are, but chances are they are super talented and everyone close to the Michigan program knows this. In other words, it's much more accepted in the team environment than the world of the fandom that supports the team.

Well, what a great present. I have you to thank for me getting mine at Christmas a couple of years ago. After you get a chance to wear it a while you’ll probably wonder how the Dude worn his in sunny California. I should did. Lol

We lowly fans “understand the reasoning” and realize any player’s right to transfer to another school or bail out of a bowl game. We don’t have to like it however.
That coaches and players are much closer to the game is obvious. Is this really a revelation ?
Personally, I believe in West Virginia’s case, Grier’s absence cost his team the game. I understand his reasoning, but his teammates busted their butts for four months and had their biggest weapon removed.

Just wondering if you all get this upset at OU every time the team cuts a kid off his football scholarship to free one up for an incoming player? If not (and you don’t) you are being completely hypocritical.

Schools do this EVERY year to kids. And quite frankly way more often than a guy skipping a bowl game. Where’s your outrage at the schools?

You may be right, but name one Sooner that was doing everything right, going to class, making every practice, keeping up his grades, etc. that lost his scholarship. I don’t know of one. Do you?

Dude, I couldn't be happier with it. I'm surprised at how well made and how warm it is. Will be perfect for the cool nights in Mexico this winter.

Compared to you ? No.

I never called you lowly. You assumed this all by yourself. In fact, I've never thought of you that way. So stop this pity wagon shit. We feel different about a subject. So what. I will say this, for an older, more seasoned experienced poster, you're posting a little bit on the immature side of things. Lighten up and enjoy the game.

Peace out.

Yeah, it's just like, my opinion man. But they did say on the pregame that the Michigan DC was none too happy about it. They had two captains that sit out the game.

What I've said has nothing to do with "pity" or being "immature".
When you jab, sometimes someone jabs back.

Not sure what you're point is here? Are you saying it doesn't happen? I can expand a bit, just need to know what direction you're trying to take the discussion.

The issue of naming one: we're not talking about stars, starters, or even guys with spotty playing time. We're talking about guys who can't crack the 2-deep lineup, who can't even make special teams. They're the nobodies that most people never heard of, the guys who never see the playing field. So, no, I can't name one without doing research.

Name a guy who that happened to at OU. I don't think you can.

What if you are a generational player who has been one hit away from season's end while playing hurt all year for "the good of the team"?

Until (I hope it never happens) colleges start paying players for their large commitments to the program, I won't second guess a player. All these guys dream of playing in the NFL and some are that good AND lucky. If a young man believes he has a multi-million dollar rookie contract just waiting to be signed, does he take the risk of playing one more game, which is actually just an exhibition, or stay away and focus on life's next stage?

It's not a simple decision.

Fair enough.. But one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that most, if not all of those types of players have huge insurance policies as a hedge against injuries.

I think you're right. We seem to gain players... like transfers into OU. You know like Kyler Murray... Baker Mayfield

I just know that I've seen several posts over the past few years on twitter showing guys that I hadn't heard a peep about since they signed wearing their caps and gowns and holding their diplomas. Ricky DeBerry is a recent example

I doubt either side will be swayed by argument. I'm older and still think a guy should play if he can. I have paid tuition for a daughter to attend TU in Tulsa. I can promise, a free education to any school is worth something to a player. It could get to the point where a star for a .500 team might just quit mid season. Why risk getting hurt if you're sure to be drafted and your team has no chance of making playoffs? My two cents is worth about that. .02. But I doubt I'm convinced it's good for college football that guys defer to play the last game of the season.

What if I said that we can be both:
- not happy that it's happening, and
- understand and respect the players decision to do it

The trend will continue to grow as the college players continue to not get paid, and the NFL salaries grow. So, we either learn to deal with it or realize that we're becoming "get off my lawn" kind of people.

As for the person who exaggerated that this continued pattern will ruin college football: we're talking about the elite 0.1% of all players. I'm sure college football will survive just fine with the remaining 99.9% of players.

I guess at the end of the day everyone does whats best for them and we don't care if others like it or not as its our decision or choice to make. I quit worrying about what others thought about me and my decisions long ago and I am sure they are no different. Their choice to make, I don't have to like it and it won't affect my life one way or the other but it very well could theirs so we should respect it I guess. Not much else you can do.

Kinda close to that myself, had a neighbor and his teenagers a while back that used my driveway to turn around all the time as did their guests that would visit them and they did often. Was always getting up off the couch to see who was here only for them to back up and leave. Finally got tired of it and said something and was told I was a liar that they never did and never would use our driveway. Funny how a security camera does not lie. :D
