If I were West Virginia

If Allison is the future QB of WVA they'll be lucky to win 6 games next year. Red shirt Sophomore and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Seriously, as an old QB myself I could of done better than he did and I'm 73 and I'm probably more mobile...lol

The future of TCU and WVU are trending downward. Baylor slightly upward. Jury out on Okie Light and Tech. Level for Shorthorns and K-State. Iowa State upwards. Then there is KU lol.

If you were him or he your Son... a serious discussion would be in play.
1. What is the gain?
2. What is the risk?

Same could be said of any Senior that sees playing time. Why play and risk injury? Some injuries can affect you your whole life, football is a dangerous sport, not like he was told that yesterday he knew it when he signed up to play pee wee ball. What would people say if Murray decided to sit out tomorrow night? Why would he or should he risk injury in a game that may or may not end in a win to play for the National Title? I know what you are saying but I just don't agree that players should sit out and quit on their teammates like that.
Just my opinion nothing more.

I just don't like the trend that is starting I can see their argument for not playing but the same argument could be made for ANY game. Down by 21 in the 4th....why should I risk getting hurt in a loss. Playing an imposing pass rush.....coach maybe I should set this one out. It's their decision I guess but as a fan I hate it and it would burn me up if it was my team mate.

He didn't quit though. He finished the schedule as listed. What is wrong with looking at a bowl game as a tune up next year? In this example, WVA has identified flaws in their QB that can be worked. on all winter in preparation for a better season next year.

Because doing this during a regular season and/or playoff game would score against the player if he ever went to the pros. The bowl game is nothing but an exhibition game unless it is for the playoffs.

This is why the bowl system is a joke. Get rid of the glorified exhibition games and go with a full playoff.

I get what you are saying but, what about the guys on the team playing their last Football game ever? I am sure they would like to go out with a Bowl Win, a Trophy they can take back to the School and a Ring to boot. Something they can tell their kids about and grandkids about. Its not all about him and what he wants, its a team sport and he quit on them plain and simple. If you think Bowl Games are meaningless (I don't) then it does not matter I guess but I bet most of these guys playing their last football game ever see it differently.
We just look at it differently thats all.

He quit on his team for selfish reasons. WV brought him in as a second chance risk. Gave him decent offensive tools. Then he says kiss my ass at the end because the big baby did not make any playoff game. I hope this loser’s draft stock just took a huge hit. Like JC Penney’s stock only worse. Screw him.

Whatever side of the debate you take, what Grier did is a slap in the face to West Virginia, its coaches, its team and its fans. Lots of money was spent on Grier in terms of coaching and training and....probably of least concern....getting a free education.
And the NFL "farm system" takes its toll on CFB once again.
Here's what you should do if you think there are too many bowls: watch only the ones you care about and don't care about the issue of too many bowl games because it is out of your control and should not diminish your love of CFB. (I think there are too many bowls and teams should not go unless they are in a position to still have a winning record even if they lose the bowl game).
The four teams in this year's playoff are the best choices....3 undefeated teams and Oklahoma with arguably the greatest offense in history. Only Ohio State with a 12-1 record had any complaint....but they were mauled by Purdue 49-20, a Purdue team that lost 63-14 to Auburn yesterday. So screw Ohio State.
A "full playoff" is excessive and unnecessary and would put undeserving teams in the mix with two or more losses. I would rather see those teams (two-losses-or-more) play in bowls with no championship at stake.
But I realize that making money trumps everything, even common sense, so I expect the playoff format to expand to 6-8 teams in the not-too-distant future....and to some, that still won't be enough.

Loyalty to a team in any sport at any level is a dying entity.
Many athletes have a loyalty to their team like that of a 42nd Street hooker. Highest bidder wins.

He was loyal. He gave everything he had to obtain a championship. They fell short. The bowl game will not add to or change the standings. He played in his bowl game last year getting ready for this season.

Why are bowl games played? Serious question.
Baylor & Vandy played in Houston on Thursday night in front of 51,000 fans at the NRG stadium. Baylor 7-6, Vanderbilt 6-7. Neither of these teams are great teams. Actually barely average. Tell me why are they being played?

If my son accepted the scholarship and the school fulfilled it’s obligations to him then these questions wouldn’t ever be a consideration. The season is over when the last game has been played not after the regular season. All these guys that have quit on their teammates by not participating in the bowls will do it again one day. I hope Greer and all like him fail.

You answered your own question, in part, mentioning 51,000 fans saw the Baylor-Vanderbilt game. But you made no mention of the game being an exciting game and being fun to watch.
I don't disagree that there are too many bowls (41), but as long as the bowl season makes money, it looks like it will stay at least at 41.
Again, if any of these bowl games don't meet you lofty standards, don't watch them.
Serious (and very obvious) answer why bowl games are played: money and the interest of the fans of the teams participating. I don't recall anyone here not wanting to watch OU's bowl games against Arkansas, Connecticut, or Iowa, or Stanford, or Auburn...teams with at least 5 losses.

Agree to disagree. If I or my son had the opportunity to earn a fat cat NFL contract, I'd have no issue with them sitting out a meaningless bowl game.

As to the fans, I have no idea who QB in the 1970 whatever cotton bowl game. But as a fan of football, I'm pretty sure someone did. My point is that the QB then and the QBs today, when given the opportunity to make millions have to consider the risks. And if it upsets or pisses fans off that sit home watching the game while eating Doritos and drinking Dr Pepper that a certain QB isn't playing, then so be it. That's per selfishness on behalf of a fan that offers no financial interest to the future of the kid(s).

Everybody is a winner in CFB football but the injured players.

It’s very interesting to learn that if Kyler, Evans and Cody all decided to sit today’s game out for the same reason as Greer you would support them. I wish I weren’t so selfish. Not!

Bama, it appears you have ended this debate.

Not so fast my Bowl Game friend!
None of the OU players mentioned are sitting out as the OU season is not over. There is still something to play for besides sellings chips, soft drinks, and insurance. If OU wasn't in the playoffs, it wouldn't bother me at all for any of these players to do what they feel is best for their future. As a fan, I'm thankful for what they have given me each week thus far and as a result, I support their decisions going forward. I'm of the thought process of "who's got next"!

Kids give up football and their scholarship for various reasons and various stages of their career and we go on down the road. They aren't our slaves. My suggested expense payback is just a deterrent.

Count me in, too. What if we were playing Georgia? Where do you draw the line? There is no line. You play until you become ineligible. But this is all I have to say about it.

I think you guys are seriously reading me wrong. I want all of the players to play. But I also respect their wishes as student-athletes, non-professional football players. It is an extremely dangerous sport that can and does change lives. If they desire to play in the NFL and have been blessed w/ the skill sets to do so, I hold no grudges. We're not talking about the average player, much less even an average starter. We're talking about those few that have been blessed w/ a special talent. I think as fans, we should be excited and very thankful they shared that talent w/ us and OU. As far as payback to the school for the scholarship, what we are talking about is the best of the best players and chances are the school made some serious money of the player already. Lucrative TV contracts and endoresements due to OU football is real. OU football is promoted using these star players.

If OU wasn't playing in today's game and Kyler decided to move on to explore the draft and/or report to Oakland, we all would be posting and discussing Austin Kendall and his upcoming performance against the OU bowl opponent. As fans we wouldn't miss a beat. OU football would contuinue. We would be able to see a glimpse our future.

If you feel differently, it's all good by me. And it doesn't matter what we fans think or believe. Coaches coach. Players play. Fans cheer or jeer.

So what if Kyler comes out today and says that playing in this game is too big of a risk to his professional career?

So what if Kyler comes out today and says that playing in this game is too big of a risk to his professional career?

I recognize that this is a hypothetical question. I'd have issues w/ it. For a couple of reasons. I'll get to those in a bit. I don't see the logic with any player that is playing in the playoffs doing this. The NFL Owners, GMs, Coaches, and scouts would in most cases score this 'against' the player. Quitting when a play or a game that is on the line and at the most critical point of the player's career would be a deterrent in the selection process.

Now to the two reasons...
1. Because he's played every game this season while already under a professional baseball contract. The reasoning would not be sufficient.
2. There is still a title to play for, i.e.
College Football National Title > Doritos' Citrus Bowl Title
