I remember, quite well, the Brent Venebles days of a really aggressive defense that would give up some big plays. With those big plays givin' up, OU's defense would, usually, make some big plays of their own and I remember a lot of tackles for a loss.
Now, it seems that we are scared of giving up a big play, and the end result is, in theory, I guess, a gap sound defense that plays soft.
I get that the weakest part of OU's defense is the defensive backfield. I am liking the front 6 or 7 or whatever they actually are (front 5? whatever).
If you were the coach or defensive coordinator, what would your strategy be?
I remember getting pissed at Veneble's defense, at times, giving up the long ball. Now I'm pissed on every play, damn near, as I watch QB pressure being dang near non-existent. It seems like "Which is the worse of the two evils?" Giving up a big play, on occasion, and maybe quite a few, in this league or dying a slow death, which seems to have the same end result, 7 points, only worse because now the defense will be worn out by halftime as they are on the field for 10 plays per drive as opposed to two or three plays.
If it were me, I'd go the aggressive route, which now is quite obvious, would have to lead to more turnovers with pressured throws and blind sided QB's.
I don't know if it is Lincoln that is formulating this plan or if it was M.Stoops and we are just sticking with it as we are midseason, but whatever, or whoever made this call, I dislike it!
Let your athletes be athletes and if they get burned, oh well.
