Hurts getting back into the mix of the Heisman Race

Your right about the crappy D but wrong about Hurts. His play Saturday was not great and he is lucky not to have been picked 3 other times and one that should have been a pick 6. The first TD was lucky it wasn’t an INT. Its not hate on Hurts from me as much as it seems he lacks that ability to stand in the pocket without getting happy feet way to quickly.

I realize he has been important to this team but do we really know if Rattler had been playing and getting that valuable playing time we still wouldn’t be at 8-1? It’s all speculation really on any of our parts. Your right the D is the main problem but lately the problem also falls on Riley and his offensive play calling lately and lack of execution by the offense. That entire second half the offense was not good.

I think we were fortunate to go up 35-14 at the half as it could have very well been a 14-14 game if ISU makes those INT or worse 21-14 ISU lead. The O was far from great Saturday as they were more lucky than great. Just my opinion but I am sure others see me as being wrong.

Hurts is here for a reason, mainly I think because Riley knew we did not have a QB on Campus already that could give us a shot this year at a BIG 12 Championship or NC.
Rattler was not ready otherwise why would Riley pursue Hurts to come to OU?
Riley probably also knew our defense would not improve much this year over the past few years and believed Hurts would give us the best chance at winning the Big 12 and see what happens with the playoffs. He also likely knew with the soft schedule that Hurts gave him a chance at 3 straight Heisman QB's which looks damn good on a resume. He is paid more than we will earn in 100 lifetimes so I would guess that speculation on whether Rattler would have us at 8-1 vs where Hurts might take us is out the window, he knew the best chance we had this year was with Hurts. Just my 2 cents.

Agree 100%.
Hurts' addition as a one year "loan" from Alabama was to bridge the gap (2019) while Rattler and Mordecai were in a developmental mode. OU would very likely have at least three losses had Riley had to play Mordecai and Rattler this season.
Hurts was the only logical option Riley had given OU's QB depth.
And in 2020, OU will have two QB's of limited experience with no incoming QB coming in.....unless Riley snatches a grad transfer or a JUCO transfer....and I don't believe Colt Atkinson is an option for the depth chart.

Well I value your 2 cents and always enjoy your post but in this instance with the lack of real playing time for Mordercai and Rattler this season still leaves OU with an unproven QB entering next season. So outside of Rattler getting the year to learn the offense don’t you think next season we are looking at a 9 win season which would have likely been the same this year if he had not gotten Hurts? The upside would have been both of these backups would have gotten much more valuable playing time to prepare for next season.

Yep. Instead of getting the young guys' feet wet while the defense is getting retooled, let's just go ahead and muck up two seasons.

By the way, LR recruited Austin Kendall and had what, three years to get him ready? And then he has to go get a senior transfer, who looks exactly the same this year as he did at his old school.

Kendall in 2019
12 TDs
10 INTs

He's on a crappy team, sure. Regardless, that's some pretty horrible decision making.

I think Kendall might be a practice hoss and gameday dud.

Murray had to wait his turn and only had one year to run the offense and he did pretty well with so who is to say Rattler won't be able to run it next year with a lot of success?
If we a defense he might have gotten more playing time this season but thats not likely to happen the rest of the way.
We still only have one loss not 3 so there is a chance we win out however we could drop one or 2 more as well. I guess we will see what happens, not much else we can do at this point.

This is a double barreled question because who is to say we still wouldn’t be 8-1 with the very talented Rattler this year? Its all based on speculation either way. Its possible Rattler could have been one of those true Freshman phenoms and he wouldnt have been the first in CFB.

True but I think Riley knew Rattler was not ready to start and thats why Hurts is here.
I would have to look it up but when was the last time OU had a Freshman QB that came in and was named the starter?

Can’t really remember myself. I do though think with the first 4 games we had this year it would have afforded the ability to help Rattler grow as a CFB QB. I trust Riley but it still just leaves me wondering considering the hype about Rattler.
