Hurts getting back into the mix of the Heisman Race

Jalen is a great person, and I am glad Rattler is getting some sideline time until next year. Hurts just is slowish on his reads unlike Mayfield and Murray. If he can catch those middle route guys like Basquine Hall Morris Calcaterra (when he comes back) I strongly believe his numbers can grow. Singling out Cee Dee will end up getting stuffed as he is now double and triple teamed. Good to see Brooks get his wheels back, but am concerned that the talented Stevenson sits on the sideline.

Hurts will probably make it to NY but I can't see him winning it now unless Burrow tanks and Jalen just goes crazy these last few games.

Is it just me or (I know I've been harping); is LR overextended as HC & OC ? And then recruiting on top of all that ? We need a few more young zen masterminds around to put all the pieces together, imo
I agree. I think it is time. Even Riley is admitting he isn't calling the games great all the time. Maybe he is smart enough to know it is time to be a head coach and get a talented OC to execute his vision.

Agree Stevenson is a hoss, wish he'd get more carries

I wouldn't be surprised to see Gundy's son one day calling plays somewhere. I don't know his role exactly but he's always attached at the hip of Riley on game days and I don't believe he's just a student assistant anymore.

My vote goes to Burrows at LSU.
Hurts' oskie late in the game vs Iowa State set up the Cyclones' last TD. And it was a bad decision to throw it into heavy traffic instead of out of bounds or just taking the loss of yardage. Hurts is a good player, OU would not be 8-1 without him and he has been fun to watch for the most part....I just think Burrow is the best in the country.

Yes agree this is Barrow’s year. The only thing that would derail him would be an untimely injury down the stretch. I cannot disagree that his stats have stood out over the quality opponents. Hurts has great stats but against marginal opponents. Tua’s injury put him on a side rail. He still looks injured. Fields is climbing the ranks too as the Buckeyes move through the Big 10 and marginal opponents.

I believe I've been unfortunately wrong about Hurts this season. His stats are completely propped up by Lamb and Rambo. They account for more than 55% of his passing yards.

The TEs and RBs are completely absent from the passing game. Jalen appears to read, "Lamb?, Rambo?, Run." I suspect he's poor at reading defenses. If Lamb is doubled and Rambo is doubled, then there should be a wide open TE or wide open RB in the flats. Why haven't we seen those RB swing safety nets for a poor defense-reading QB?

Is Mykel Jones injured? Why aren't Haselwood and Basquine targeted more?

And next year we'll have a quarterback with zero experience at the helm.

This is true but at least I believe he will stand in the pocket and go through his reads before taking off to run. As someone pointed out Hurts seems to only see Lamb and Rambo and he has other options like check down reads to RB. I just think he enjoys his own stats at times.

He does the right things off the field but he has shown on the field that if you pressure him he has a big tendency to make mistakes. This is why Tua replaced him at Alabama and just like he is here at OU he is still a favorite in Bama. Would he be though if Bama had not come back to beat UGA?

I know this isn’t fair to say but sometimes I just wish we had taken our lumps and chances with Mordecai and Rattler this year to get them ready for the next season. There is no doubt JH is a quality person and a great athlete and despite his stats I just don’t believe he is a great QB.

I've said this from the jump.... and been roundly criticized for it.

Hurts is a slightly better Trevor Knight.
That's a little harsh. He isn't great at reading coverages, but he's only beein in the system for ten months. And is unfamiliar with any opponents before this season. He's a quality college quarterback. But I wouldn't rank him ahead of any of our four Heisman winners in this century, nor Heupel, the runner up.

But he's a quality runner. And he's also working behind the least effective OLine in comparison to the other five.

They got beat in the bowl game, despite an undefeated regular season. In those days, the voting ended before the bowl games were played.
I know that. Kentucky, Bear Bryant and Babe Parilli beat OU in the Sugar Bowl 13-7. Still no national championship during Vessels' Heisman year in 1952.

Lots of hate on Hurts. Had he not transferred to OU we would be sitting at 2 losses maybe 3 and no chance at the Big 12,11,10 Title Game. Last time I checked Riley still called the plays not Hurts.
If anyone thought Hurts coming to OU this season was going to get us number 8 then you need to look no further than the crappy defense we put on the field year in and year out, that is the main reason we have not won one in almost 20 yrs.
I am not sure what else Hurts could do but he does not have much help on offense this year, guys need to step up.
Hurts knew how bad our Defense was before he transferred so it makes me wonder if Grinch was the deciding factor that he came to OU. Bet he has had regrets lately about that decision. His late int didn't let Iowa State back into the game, the CRAPPY DEFENSE DID.

Geno Cappelleti ( sp? ) was a WR for Minnesota. The Kentucky QB was Vito "Babe" Parelli. Oh, and Hurts was surrounded by a complete team when he won the NC. That was far from the case with TK.
That TK win over Alabama does not get near enough credit imo. What a heck of a win and it totally took me by surprise, wasn’t expecting that from Knight but he was freaking nails all game. Bester was also a straight up hoss that game.as were many others including Striker who they had no answer for.
Unfortunately that game also is responsible for Mike Stoops eternal quest and use of a 230lb rush end like Striker. Works great until the opponent decides to run at them and they have to set the edge.

Correction made. Got my Italians mixed up at 3:47 in the morning.
Another factor in that Sugar Bowl win over Alabama was Alabama's poor performance....2 interceptions, 3 fumbles lost and 5 sacks.
I will stick to my theory that Alabama was both overconfident and playing in a bowl they didn't want to be in after the "kick-6" loss to its biggest rival to end the regular season....then coming up against an Oklahoma team that had a huge chip on its shoulder, and a young quarterback that had a "Cinderella" performance.

TK had the game of his life that night in N.O., never to be duplicated before or since. I will say that had he played in a Riley O as a starter he would have been pretty good. The RPO game suited him.

Your right about the crappy D but wrong about Hurts. His play Saturday was not great and he is lucky not to have been picked 3 other times and one that should have been a pick 6. The first TD was lucky it wasn’t an INT. Its not hate on Hurts from me as much as it seems he lacks that ability to stand in the pocket without getting happy feet way to quickly.

I realize he has been important to this team but do we really know if Rattler had been playing and getting that valuable playing time we still wouldn’t be at 8-1? It’s all speculation really on any of our parts. Your right the D is the main problem but lately the problem also falls on Riley and his offensive play calling lately and lack of execution by the offense. That entire second half the offense was not good.

I think we were fortunate to go up 35-14 at the half as it could have very well been a 14-14 game if ISU makes those INT or worse 21-14 ISU lead. The O was far from great Saturday as they were more lucky than great. Just my opinion but I am sure others see me as being wrong.

CeeDee is going to be one rich dude. I think we're witnessing OU's biggest Pro player in quite some time. Adrian Peterson / Gerald McCoy type. 8-10 year starter and 3-4 All Pro's. I hope he gets selected by a team that can throw it.

Seems about right. Jerry Jeudy is an awesome receiver too, but I lean towards CeeDee being the better all-around receiver. I agree with the article though that Jeudy will likely be drafted first and CeeDee second. Denver isn't an optimistic spot for CeeDee.

I'd be surprised if 2 WRs go in the Top 10 though. 3 went in the Top 10 of the 2017 Draft, but I don't think any of them are paying off in dividends.
