You have no idea what you're asking for.

I'm going to assume you are a young person, sorry if I assume incorrectly. Part of that assumption is that if you had been out in the business world you would already know some of what I'm about to tell you.

You think "free" college is a great idea? Of course it would not be free. It would add $billions in taxes to all of us including you in a few years. $billions of additional taxes for corruption and waste and all the other things government is good at. And for the young people, you would be very sorry if that happened, we all would.

So here we go, undergrad college is now free!!!! Yayyyyyyy. So "for pay" education is just magically a thing of the past right? Of course not.

Here is what would happen. Great news your undergrad is now free of charge. Congratulations you now have another 4-5 years of high school. You have just added 4-5 years of mandatory education. Of course you wouldn't have to take it but you're a "drop out" if you don't and unhireable. So additional high school it is. Now that it's free and just another 4 years of school the curriculum and testing has to be dumbed down to accommodate everyone. Everyone is entitled to it and everyone should have a FAIR chance to be successful at it. The "undergrad" education becomes completely worthless. Worth as much and just as respected as a high school diploma.

Companies don't respect it now, any more than high school. Companies now demand a higher level of education than just the normal state provided drivel. They will demand higher learning. They will demand that everyone they hire now have post "undergrad" education. That is the new "college". The problem is now that post undergrad education is not elite anymore either. It's expected. It becomes what undergrad used to be but it will cost more and it will be 4 more years. That's great.

So the net/net is that you have inserted 4 more years of state sponsored education that will in no way prepare people to be better professionals, will cost more and take 4 more years out of their earning lives. So now you're not 22 when you can start earning you're 26 or 27. With the same student debt. With the same level of education you would have had. So the only difference you have made is 4-5 more years of your life in high school. Hope you're in the popular crowd.
