I know the 'other' CB position opposite of Woodi Washington has been a hotly talked about one this fall camp. I spoke to some sources today that informed me that they feel Gentry Williams is the leader heading into the depth chart release (not their decision, so we will see if their feeling is correct), but I was also told by another source, "take that depth chart for what you will," the source said. "How it's listed and who plays or starts is always different as the week moves along toward Saturday, and as the season progresses."
Gentry Williams, Jasiah Wagoner and Makari Vickers have been battling it out this fall camp. All three have been doing a stellar job, according to a few sources. All three are expected to play, if healthy (Wagoner has been battling some nicks and bruises all fall camp). The heat on Saturday will add to a lot of rotation, so I would expect to see someone different at both corner spots every few series due to the the temperature on the field.
Lastly, on Williams, I was told by a source that they feel his upside is huge, and they added, "By the end of the year, as long as he stays healthy, I am betting he becomes what this teams needs opposite Woodi [Washington] and he might just end up being the most consistent and best corner on the team," the source said of Gentry Williams. "Just like CJ Coldon last year, he was banged up a bit to start the year, but he needed reps and got better each time he got them in-game. Feel that will be the same with Gentry. If he can get the reps needed to grow, he could be what this defense has needed with his speed and ability on the backend."
High praise for the sophomore DB. Praise Sooners fans hope he gets the chance to live up to in the 2023 season. Where he is on the depth chart on Tuesday will be telling on if that growth will be possible early in the season. Obviously, that's when reps are used for growth before conference play.
All that said, take the depth chart for what you will, as the source said. I expect us to see a lot of players on Saturday and I am betting we see a few 'OR' at several positions. I put the O/U at 4.5 'OR' listed. Maybe/probably even at that 'other' CB position, with how the trio has been battling it out.
You taking the over or under?
