*** I’ll start with newly offered 2024 safety Reggie Powers and where things stand with him.
First, I’m told that Powers is being pushed and recruited as a nickel/safety more so than just a safety. That is because the Sooners have four-star and Rivals200 safety Jaydan Hardy already onboard, with OU also looking to potentially add 2024 four-star ATH Michael Boganowski at the other safety (more on him in a below in this post).
As for Powers, it seems the Ohio native is being heavily recruited by Sooners head coach Brent Venables. BV, safety coach Brandon Hall and Powers' family all had a conversation last week about the Sooners and their plans for three-star safety safety target.
In that conversation, the Sooners' staff pressed upon Powers and his family that they come and give the Sooners a look in the near future. According to several sources that I spoke with last night, Powers and his family agreed to make the trip if it was an official visit on October 21st when the Sooners take on UCF. Now, if you all remember, I reported last Tuesday that OU was looking to bring in Powers on the 21st, but at the time it was for unofficial visit to start. Or at least that was the original plan, according to what I had been told at that time. Obviously, all of that has changed with the Sooners now fully invested in Powers and Oklahoma wanting to take a hybrid safety in the 2024 class. Because of all of that, an official visit was the needed if Oklahoma wants to land the newly offered safety target.
On the Sooners' chances, I am told most inside the Switzer Center feel the Sooners have a good shot to land Powers. Yes, there is a chance that Ohio State takes a look at Powers again, and that would be hard to compete with due to Powers being an instate guy for the Buckeyes. Still, it seems that is not the type of safety Ohio State is looking for at this moment. And according to our guy Jeremy Birmingham, at Dotting the Eyes (ohiostate.rivals.com), Ohio State isn't looking for what OU is in need of, and it seems OU wants what the Buckeyes don't specifically need right now -- a hybrid, in the box, bigger safety. That's what OU wants for their nickel/safety spot they are recruiting, and that is what Powers brings to the table.
Here is what Birmingham has said about Powers and the Buckeyes just last week (read it yourself at Dotting the Eyes): "But what's also not changed is that, despite a need at safety, the Buckeyes are seeking a true free-safety type of prospect and even though he's showing some versatility this season playing multiple spots, Powers best college football future is going to be as an in-the-box safety or a hybrid-linebacker type of defensive player."
Naturally, that should make Sooners fans feel better about OU's chances with Powers, but nonetheless, if there are new developments, we will keep you all apprised of those changes. Until then, expect Powers to be in Norman on October 21st and know that I like the Sooners' chances. Almost to the point I am close to putting in a FC. A pick that could come in the next week or so if I gather a bit more information or hear even more confidence in the Sooners' direction.
*** Okay, so now to the safety that you all are wanting to hear about in 2024 four-star ATH Michael Boganowski Jr.
Here is what I know:
First, the four-star Junction City (KS) ATH got a little banged up with a concussion this past week. Naturally, with an injury of that level, there will be some day-to-day precautionary measures taken before Boganowski is allowed to return to action. If we hear more on that, we will update you all but Junction City does have a game vs 4-1 Manhattan (KS) on Friday. Boganowski also ends their season before most around Oklahoma or Texas, with a season ending game vs Emporia (KS) on October 20th.
So, why does that matter? Well, there continues to be some buzz that is gaining steam behind the scenes. That buzz is that Boganowski may be looking to announce before the month of October ends. Again, it's just buzz at this point, but I with that buzz there is talk that OU could end up hosting Boganowski again later this month (depending on if his squad makes the playoffs or not). That visit, from the buzz I am hearing, could take place on October 21st. And that date is getting bigger and bigger by the day if Boganowski, Reggie Powers, Eddy Pierre-Louis and a few others actually make it to Norman that weekend for visits... I digress...
I do think there is a chance that KSU also gets another visit from Boganowski, but again, if the visit takes place on October 21st it would be very big for the Sooners and safety coach Brandon Hall.
Also, the Sooners staff (whole defensive staff) had a big talk with Boganowski and his family last week. That talk seemed to have went well, according to sources. Because of that, I am starting to get the feeling the Sooners may be making a strong move here late in the process, and potentially separating themselves a bit. Again, that is just my feeling off what I am hearing.
To add to that building of confidence, if Oklahoma can get the four-star ATH, and top player in the Sunflower State, to make a decision before the end of October, I would feel even better about the Sooners' chances than I have in a long time. Probably since the ChampUBBQ and Part at the Palace events, to be honest.
Quick Take: This isn't done for anyone recruiting Boganowski at all -- and there is/will be some battling that will go on until the four-star makes a final decision -- but if the Sooners can continue to build off their recent push, I think OU will be hard to beat here. Because of that last part, I do like my Future Cast a bit more than I did just a few days ago, but we will continue to watch this recruitment very closely as KSU, OU and even Kansas look to take some big swings at Boganowski in hopes they are the pick come decision time -- whenever that may be.
