NORMAN, Okla. — Running back Trey Sermon and defensive lineman Kenneth Mann both left Saturday’s contest against Iowa State and didn’t return. The two both suffered season-ending injuries that will require surgery, head coach Lincoln Riley announced Monday during his weekly press conference inside the MidFirst Bank Stadium Club.

“I’m sick, heartbroken for those two,” Riley said. “They’ve put a ton into this program.”

Previously, OU had boasted perhaps the healthiest running back room in the country throughout the season. That obviously took a major turn in the opposite direction when Sermon appeared to injure his left knee at the tail end of a 14-yard run late in the second quarter.

Sermon was unable to get up immediately after the third-and-19 play. After a short break in action, he was eventually helped off the field, taken to the medical tent, then to the locker room for further testing.

The carry served as Sermon’s only one of the contest. Before that, he delivered a great block on an impressive 63-yard CeeDee Lamb touchdown reception.

Mann, meanwhile, left the contest earlier. He went down following a third down play in the second quarter where the Sooners forced a Cyclones punt.

After being tended to on the field by trainers, he was slow to get up and, too, needed help to get off the field. Mann entered the medical tent, where testing began on him.

Including his 14-yard run, Sermon rushed for 385 yards and four touchdowns on 54 carries this season. Along with Kennedy Brooks and Rhamondre Stevenson, he’s one of three backs with 300-plus yards this season. Quarterback Jalen Hurts leads the Sooners with more than 800 yards and 14 touchdowns. Sermon amassed 1,691 yards and 18 touchdowns the previous two seasons. He averaged 60.4 yards per game.

Mann, who didn’t record a tackle in the contest, had already battled the injury bug and missed a good portion of the early part of the season. He logged five total tackles for the Crimson and Cream in 2019.

The redshirt senior from Burleson, Texas, has compiled 86 tackles, including 13 for loss and seven sacks, throughout his career. He also has three forced fumbles, two pass deflections and an interception to his credit.

Elsewhere, Riley also announced that linebacker Caleb Kelly is close to helping out, while tight end Grant Calcaterra will be out at least another week. Kelly has recovered from a torn ACL, and Calcaterra hasn’t played since the Kansas game because of an undisclosed injury.
