If you listen to his interviews, it sounds like stopping big play is his primary yardstick for D.
It seems like he has mandated that the D coaches stop big plays, or else.
I have heard Riley brag on D that they have no big plays.

Well, the D has stopped big plays, but it makes them much worse than last year.
Since Riley is obsessed with stopping big play, the D is playing passive and not forcing issue.
We play prevent D with umbrella on any key play. INSANE!

So now, it is impossible to stop anything other than the big play.
They cannot stop redzone, 3rd or 4th down or any important play.
Riley has to change his measure of a successful D.

This death by a thousand cuts approach to Defense is crazy.
