Dillon Gabriel is a Sooner

Bring Gabriel for a year, then welcome Arch Manning to the program. Thats one QB who probably doesnt care about the $$$

Venables may have tired of Williams’ cat and mouse game and offered Gabriel…..or….it somehow became clear that Williams just wanted out so Venables made the move.

Woke up today thinking that Williams is gone.
Gabriel is too good to be someone's backup and if Williams were to return, how much would Gabriel play ? Gabriel's broken left collar bone suffered in September did not require surgery and is probably going to heal by March, so OU redshirting him cannot be an option if Williams returns.
Bottom line: if you connect all the dots in this situation, Williams is very unlikely to stay. I am guessing that Venables knows what is about to happen with CW.

Didn’t BV state when he got here that he wanted players who wanted to play for OU? Maybe he told Williams if he wanted to chase the money then OU wasnt the place for him. I may be in the minority here but I hope OU doesnt bring him him back. He chose to leave for greed.

Gabriel obviously believes in Lebby and his system. He knows that Lebby will give him a chance to make all the money he needs as a pro. Gabriel is a left-handed Baker Mayfield.

So….going forward, how do teams protect their investment(recruits/players, rosters) from being cherry picked every year. What’s stopping a Marcus Major or one of our backs accepting $50,000 NIL deal to transfer, or our best Dlineman whatever the case may be. Some kids will be very vulnerable to short term money being offered to them and maybe not look at the big picture.

Gabriel is certainly a serviceable QB. His upside is probably along the lines of a Nate Hybl or Landry Jones. He should do fine with a good OC like Jeff Lebby.

I’m thinking Williams is gone but I believe that Gabriel has 3 years to play so it is possible for Williams to start but who knows what Venables is thinking he’s probably tired of it already

Gabriel will be a junior, one good year and he will be gone. Evers will be ready to take over by then, or if we get real lucky Arch Manning will be on campus by that time.

I can think of a couple of reasons for starters that he is likely gone. Number one the Money and number 2 he may be thinking the offense may not improve over what it was this past season and hence hurt his draft stock.
Already seeing news stories online today claiming he is already gone and they are all speculating which school he is likely to land at.
One article said Ole Miss might be a good fit because of Kiffin and his offense. I thought Lebby was in charge of the offense at OM?
Anyway when he put off giving an answer to the questions if he was staying or leaving it seems he already knew he would not be returning. Odds on Favorites in one article where he goes is 1. Georgia 2. U$C 3. Oklahoma 4. Miami 5. Texas.

I am kinda thinking he stays but we will see I guess.

Well he better be A LOT better than Nate Hybl or we are screwed.

Gabriel is not like Hybl or Jones. He has much more mobility. If he's healthy, OU has a good QB.
Sooner Scoop mentioned Gabriel having 3 years of eligibility: 2 because he's a junior and one due to the Covid rule in 2020. Obviously, he won't be at OU for three years....maybe not even two....because OU will likely target an elite QB in the 2023 class.
Gabriel looks very good on the videos and looks to be a very accurate passer who can also throw on the run.

Hybl won a Big 12 Championship and was MVP of the Rose Bowl. I can think of a lot worse OU QB's over time.
Thats like saying Landry Jones was the best OU QB in the last 20 years simply because of numbers he was able to achieve in a QB friendly system.

lol Hybl played decent against an average Washington State team. He and Paul Thompson were probably the two worst QB's of the Stoops era.

I'd say with the exception of 3 1/2 hours when the stars aligned in the Sugar Bowl, Trevor Knight was the worst starting QB of the Stoops' era. Blake Bell would be second, although he turned out to be a stud TE. As for Paul Thompson, he was more suited to play WR than QB, but to his credit he stepped up and played admirably when Bomar got kicked off the team one week before the season started.

That 2002 Washington State team was better than you remember. Even after OU kicked their butts, they finished the year ranked #10 in the polls. Their only other losses were on the road to the eventual national champs (Ohio State) and a triple OT loss in a rivalry game to Washington.

As for Hybl on the whole, he was better, when healthy, than most probably remember. I'm not sure that a healthy Hybl isn't right there with Landry Jones regarding how good they would have been in each others' circumstances.

I agree that Hybl, Bell and Knight were not Jones, Mayfield, Murray, Hurts or Bradford but they had some good moments. Hard for me to refer to them as the “worst”.

I think that we'll look back next year at this time and see that we are just fine without Caleb.

I wish Williams well. But no one player is bigger than the team.
I don't get the CW love (not referring you). Sure, he saved OU against Texas but then flopped in 2 crucial games. He had a habit of poor decisions and seemed unable to get the ball out quickly, like ever. He was always looking for the bomb and hoping his legs would pull it out. And they did on occasions, but not enough to overcome his overall average QB play.

I agree here.....TX was his best game, but he had several average performances after that. He also seemed fairly easy to get to the ground for such a mobile QB.

Good post !
OU is transitioning from a coach who is overrated to a coach who should probably have been Stoops’ successor.
Clearly, OU has to take a step or two backwards, but the long term rewards should be realized before this year is done.
Venerables is acting intelligently and quickly to put OU back on track again….and to make it better than before.

Thank you for the post. I didn’t have the nerve to say it. You always come through, Medic.

How many guys do you think could have done as well or better than CW if they hadn't started a game since their junior year in high school? Remember, not only was he a true freshman, but he missed his entire senior season in high school due to being shut down by COVID.
