No Twitter/X announcement.

No new NIL deal.

Not for us die-hard fans.

But I’m returning!

And man, I have to say, this was a tough call. So much anguish. So much bitterness. 2024 was really hard on us fans.

Having beer poured on me during the meltdown in the Texas State Fair. There’s nothing worse than beer on your backside when you’ve lost. Sure, it’s great when that happens when we win. Hell, I’ve even been known to throw back a few and ride the stupid rides that make people vomit after a win there. And by God, IYKYK.

But, these people benefitting from NIL need to know more about what us fans go through. Such as:

Having to hear “Rocky Top” over and over in Norman of all places. Yeesh.

Having to watch our HBC fire our OC midseason! Ouch. No one really appreciates how tough that is on us fans. I mean, gee. Where is the empathy blanket when we need it?

Suffering through all that craziness we called Team #130.

And so much more…

The ultimate dilemma of the past few days: Was I going to leave my fandom of this corner of college football, or was college football leaving me, first?

Without NIL to support me, I have to seriously wonder where the priorities are for my alma mater.

And one can’t help but wonder if college football is indeed leaving all of us.

College football is off the rails, right? I mean, wouldn’t we be smart just hit the portal as fans?

There are so many reasons to bolt. Or, at least hurl.

For one thing, I find it extremely sad that in this age of NIL and the portal, my tickets just don’t seem to have the value to suggest I stick around.

Heck, I couldn’t give tickets away to the Maine game.

Yeah, sure, I saw the Bama game up close. So, yes that was good. But, honestly, I’m still not sure what happened there. Can someone please explain that to me?

But, dang. we had to suffer through so much more.

My drive down to Baton Rouge was only made better by getting to hang out in New Orleans.

Holy moly, that’s a long haul back and forth past miles and miles of swampland for a butt whoopin’. If only these players fully knew what us fans go through!

Ole Miss was at least interesting. Though the Grove was so popular and crowded that none of my friends wanted to be there. The entire experience made me think of Yogi Berra’s restaurant quote: No one goes there anymore, because it’s always too crowded (paraphrase). Sure, it was cool. Okay, I’m probably just bitter because we lost, but what the heck. I at least found myself excited to be ahead at halftime. But, you know the rest. It was all downhill from there.

I know the coaches must have thought that was a tough road trip, but they should try it from a fan standpoint. All our fans with hangovers from a late night in Memphis having to be at the Grove before an early 11 am kickoff! Brutal! Again, without NIL support for us fans in the future, we really need to at least renegotiate these 11 am kickoffs.

At least us road tripping fans had the Auburn game. That was fun. Those people were as nice as can be. Of course, someone later explained to me that we were in the Deep South, so they all probably spoke ill of me after I left, but I don’t care. We had fun and got the W. Boomer!

No, I didn’t make the trip to Columbia. Whew. Dodged a bullet on that one.

And no, I missed the Bowl game. I’ve made it to most of them recently, but my heartache this season is so dang big, I was afraid I might not survive. So I stayed at home where I could shout in the privacy of my own living room.

Now, having consulted all the challenges of surviving this dreadful 6-7 season with my agent, I knew I had to dig a little deeper and reach out to my mom, my dad, my good friends, my dog and my high school coaches. I needed advice and found it without having to call my mother-in-law. Thank God for that.

Their advice?

Stick it out. Dig deep. Things can’t get any worse.

Funny thing is I said that exact same phrase (“things can’t get any worse”) at various parts of about 7 different games this year. Most vividly, I recall saying it about five minutes into the South Carolina game. “Can’t get any worse!” Hah!

Dang, my fandom was challenged that day! And of course we all know it did get worse.

Mizzou entered the chat!

But, I digress. The advice I received also contained amazing nuggets and reminders of all that we’ll have to be thankful for next year, like:

- A new QB! And the #1 QB in the portal at that!

- A bunch of kick-butt returning defensive players! All of whom are now announcing their returns one at a time like it’s Christmas or signing day all over again. LOL.

- And despite trauma (or is it just “drama”?) in the coaching ranks, I still have hope and faith BV can find the inner strength that he found after losing to Mississippi in Shreveport back in the day. I for one recall saying to myself “it can’t get any worse” that very night! And look what we did the next year!?!? Natty, baby. So, yes, it can happen again.

With all that being said, I’m taking my fan talents back to Norman next year. I know they’ll cash my checks for my season tickets. And even though the guy to my left farted throughout the Tennessee game, I will bring a gas mask and dig deep. Because, this could be our year. I mean, heck, we’re undefeated in 2025, right? Am-I-Rite?!? What do we all say to that? Are you with me?

Let’s hear it for the Undefeated Sooner Fan Class of 2025! Boomer!

And let’s get to work on an NIL deal for us fans in 2026! Lord knows we need compensation for all our pain and suffering. Let’s goooooooo!

Oh, and share your pain and anguish stories right here. Let’s build our case for our NIL Fan Deal! If nothing else, it’ll make you feel better to vent. Or, at least draw a few laughs from us co-suffering fans!

What was your funniest or worst experience of 2024? Let it all hang out! Let all those others benefitting from our support know what we go through to pay our respects!!!! (The mixed meaning of “pay our respects” is quite intentional btw). Okay, that’s it for me. I’ve done all the damage I can do for this year. Let me know what you’ve got to add.

Happy New Year! Boomer!
