So, what is depth? Why does it matter?

Ohio State ranks 128 of 128 FBS schools in experience. They start 1 senior, at center. Two deep shows four seniors total. They beat Nebraska by 59 points last night with 10 of 22 starters being sophomores or freshmen. Next year they will have possibly 21 of 22 starters returning. 24 of 44 positions on their two deep roster are sophomores or freshmen.

Alabama has 11 of 44 in their two deep listed as seniors. 8 of them are starters. 10 freshmen occupy the two deep with 2 of them starting, and 8 of the 13 sophomores on the two deep roster are starters. So Alabama might have 14 of 22 starters returning, with 33 of 44 of the two deep possible...

Oklahoma has 9 seniors listed on the two deep, 6 start. 4 of those are on defense. 10 juniors in the two deep and 6 start, 4 of those on defense. 8 of 11 starters on defense are Jr/Sr... The good news is that OU has 27 sophomores or freshmen listed on the two deep, and 8 of them start on offense, 3 on defense. Now it is interesting that OU shows 12 positions on offense, and the depth chart being current, hasn't a Mixon, Perine, or Anderson at RB.

So, experience? Who needs experience? Doesn't having 8 of 11 guys being in their 3rd to 5th years make one think that they would know assignments?

I know. I just whine and bitch toooooooo much... LMAO.

I've always been of the opinion that it isn't the number of experienced returning, but the quality/ability of those returning. I've seen average teams with a great number of returning starters, and great teams with inexperienced yet truly gifted players. I think Alabama and Ohio State are good examples this season. I still think Bama's Achilles Heel may turn out to be their true freshman QB, but we'll see soon enough.

Quality and talent... 4 star recruit who can't tackle vs 4 star recruit who can... Both tackled at the high school level well. Both were safeties. One now plays defensive end, the other rides the bench. One was named to an All American team as a freshman at a position he never played. The other is a bust... Talent? Both have it. One has been coached into a different position, the other downgraded into oblivion while his replacements do no better.

Oh, but that second guy is in a defenseless uptempo spread attack league that only gets defended well in bowl games... That's the ticket...

Age doesn't equal experience if a player didn't play much.

True. Why aren't guys who have been at OU for 3 or 5 years have the experience or talent or whatever you want to call it, like the freshmen and sophomores at Alabama and Ohio State? Many of them have more game experience. Many were rated as highly. To me, that is either a development and/or scheme issue. If it is actual talent, or lack thereof, aren't the coaches the one's recruiting them?

I'm starting to think it's evaluation. Maybe our 4* just aren't as talented as their 4* OR our system isn't just too whatever.

I can't even remember the last time we had a great defense.

2003 defense averaged giving up about two TDs a game. It only had one bad game. The 37-7 loss to KSU in the Big 12 Championship Game. That was a damn good team that got complacent and let the Wildcats slip up on them as a big favorite. That was the first big loss for Big Game Bob.

DBs - Eric Bassey, Brandon Everage, Derrick Strait, Michael Thompson, Antonio Perkins
LBs - Teddy Lehman, Lance Mitchell, Pasha Jackson, Clint Ingram, Gayron Allen
DEs - Dan Cody, Jonathan Jackson, Calvin Thibodeaux
DTs - Dusty Dvoracek, Tommie Harris, Kory Klein, Lynn McGruder

There was a star (NFL starter talent) at every position; Tommie, Dan (albeit sidelined by knee injuries), Teddy, and Derrick.

I don't think there more than two defensive players on this year's squad that has the talent of those guys. And I can't name two, but I want to be fair.

You're right. There aren't any. You could probably say Steven Parker is on the level of Bassey/Everage at safety, but it's so hard to tell when the entire defense around him sucks. But, he probably could have plugged in for one of those guys if he had that same supporting cast. DT, DE, LB, CB? No way.

You probably see more in Parker than I give him credit for, but he is lacking when it comes to laying the wood like those two. They were big hitters and good tacklers.

He is one who made some great tackles in my other thread... He also missed a few...
