As the title suggests, are we delaying the inevitable at this point?

Do we really assume that even a strong OC hire makes this team competitive in 2024? More importantly, does it actually change the trajectory of this program?

At this point we know what this 2024 OU team is. Horrendous OL, devoid of talent at WR (injuries) and TE (development), and incompetent QB play. Inconsistent defense with poor pass coverage and poor situational awareness, not to mention bad special teams.

Let’s say this team goes 5-7 (likely) and BV is retained. What about this current roster and staff gives any hope of marked improvement next year? Unless Taylor, Sexton, and Fbechi make massive improvements the OL will still be below average. The TE room is bad and poorly coached. We don’t have an SEC level Quarterback on the roster. The defense will need to bring back everyone and mitigate transfers to have a chance at being as good as this year’s D.

Beyond that, do we suddenly expect Brent to improve as a game day head coach in year 4? The in game decisions, clock management, high penalization, constant late communication of play calls. That’s not even considering the sloppy, disorganized execution we’ve seen three straight years on the field.

To summarize, I genuinely ask would keeping Brent really even be a discussion if the buyout wasn’t $40M?
