Former OU running back Brewster Hobby passed away on Monday after a long battle with cancer. He was 82.

Hobby was a two-sport star at Midwest City High School in Oklahoma, where he was named the state's player of the year in both football and baseball. He reportedly turned down a lucrative pro baseball contract for the chance to play football for Bud Wilkinson at the University of Oklahoma.

He was a starting RB for the Sooners in 1959 and 1960. After football, Hobby went into the banking business and lived in Norman with his family for a number of years.

Sooner Spectator did a feature story on Mr. Hobby this past year. We will post that story here in his memory later today.

Brewster is shown here with teammate Prentice Gautt, who was OU's first African-American player. The two roomed together on the road.

I remember his long punt return in 1959 vs Army that was called back by a penalty. OU won 28-20.
I watched the 1959 Orange Bowl as he caught a 79 yard pass from Ross Coyle for OU's second score....as his roommate Prentice Gautt earlier ran for a 58 yard TD.
In the 3rd quarter, Coyle returned a punt 40 yards to give OU a 21-0 lead.
Three home run plays by OU were the difference, as Syracuse statistically dominated the game but lost 2 fumbles and threw two interceptions.
In my opinion, it was Wilkinson's last significant victory.

Ross was my husband's Roommate for 3 years...Before Me! ;) They served as each other's Best Man when they got married. The '59 Orange Bowl was Ross' One Moment in Time, although Prentice was named MVP, and that was OK! He, too, had a heckuva game, and both his on, AND off, the field behavior deserved to be rewarded. He paid a HUGE Price for his Education, and opened doors that have never been closed...

And you are spot on, CT...It was the beginning of the end of The Wilkinson Dynasty ...

Brewster Hobby roomed with Prentice Gautt on the road, walked with Gautt to his classes, hung out with Gautt and defended him against racist teammates.
Hobby was a special person even as a young man.
