I heard that may be the case. As long as Mike is not included and Bob is mic’d up to Grinch in the secluded coach box above OU will be fine
It'll be fun seeing him on the OU sideline again.
Yes no jack in box...he can stay at home and yell at the tv all night.
Not me. The last time a Stoops show up he chased off a decent DC. Bob Stoops needs to let go of the reins and remain on the sidelines. The defendse is finally shaping up and doing sooo much better. This is not going to end well.
Huh? A Hall of Fame coach helping in the most ridiculously weird football season and you cry foul? Bob is not Mike and should be appreciated for his help...no questions asked or suggested.

That is almost exactly what Riley said in his press session. He just didn't mention Bob's brother.
Bob was a great coach for OU but he also allowed some of the worst defensive performances under his watch and did nothing about it. Great guy and all but him leaving was absolutely needed imo. I don’t have a problem with the go get em’ Stoops helping out, the one teaching fundamental tackling of the early 2000’s not the one from the last 6 or 7 years of his coaching career.
Bob Stoops' flaw (and a huge flaw it was) in his last 6-7 years was his seemingly blind loyalty to his brother, Mike, whose coaching seemed to worsen each season....and also creating a scenario where Brent Venables felt he had to leave and head to Clemson. Venables' coaching excellence really came to light at Clemson after leaving OU.
I can only imagine how OU's football fortunes might have been been had Venables stayed at OU with Mike Stoops going instead.
Whatever reason(s) Venables left after 2011, OU's defense suffered with too many high scoring losses and yield ing big plays to opponents.
I feel if OU's defense had just been average, efforts by Mayfield and Murray in some big games would not have been in vain.
Grinch's hire should really be proven as a good hire next year, when players that he recruited mature and more enter the program.

I agree. The one thing I always go back to with the Stoops bro’s. Was the fundamentals they taught. I remember vividly OU’s defense being the one defense in the Big 12 that was able to shut down or effectively totally slow down the Leach spread in the early Leach years at Tech when everyone else was overwhelmed.
Stoops made a point back then to say that you weren’t going to totally stop a Leach offense but you could severely limit it by sound tackling, not letting the receivers get yac. OU was great at tackling. Who can forget what they did to Seneca Wallace when people were talking about him for the Heisman. Total obliteration.
To see a Stoops defense with such horrible tackling ability the last several years really said a lot about the amount of time being spent on basic fundamentals at OU. Unfortunately they were just coasting on defense at the end, trying to win with offense.
Those last few years with Bob Stoops I felt I was watching only half a team perform because of the lack of defense.
It was very obvious to many football experts that Mike Stoops schemes were flirting with disaster. He just was too stubborn for his own good. Did not matter if he was on field...in press box....or on the crapper. The GA collapse by the D in Rose Bowl was beyond words.
It became painfully obvious that Mike rode Bob's and Brent's coattails. After Mike's second stint with the Sooners, I have often wondered how much Mike was involved in the defensive game planning in his first stint with the Sooners.
A team can't win championships giving up over 350-466 points in a season as OU has done in recent years.

I recognize that Bob is not Mike. Bob was the winner of the two. I also reognize that Bob is a walking, talking, HoF legend at OU. Having said this, it's not really about Bob, it's about Grinch. I also recognize that Grinch is not Venables. But Grinch is doing a helluva job right now. Things are really looking up on the defensive side of OU football. He already had a resume that was worthy & his short time at OU is already turning heads. I just do not want any slight of any kind that could nudge Grinch to move on to a HC spot somewhere. As I beleive he is going to get offers pretty quickly. If Bob recognizes this and understands the situation that exists at OU, and is helping out because of a covid problem well that's a good thing. But if he gets too involved then it's not good, Hall of Fame or not. As I don't see Bob wanting to coach daily as a DC. We don't need a void at DC next year or even the year after. Just my 2 cents.

Riley and Grinch asked Stoops to help with practice. Stoops has stayed on as a special assistant to the athletic director just for things like this. There's no competition, rub, or anything other than Stoops stepping up to help out his former program when asked.
Short term help being provided by Bob should be applauded. A Sooner helps a Sooner when the chips are down. Raises a beer toast.

People forget that a Venables defense gave up 55 to USC in a NC game as well as some other nondescript performances. Early during Venables tenure at Clemson, Sweeney basically told Venables to shape up or ship out after some unacceptable defensive efforts. To Brent's credit, he responded in a big way after having a fire lit under his butt but it's not like his defenses at OU were Alabama-esque either. That said, I completely agree that we'd have been a lot better off keeping Venables than tolerating Mike for as long as Bob did.
Well now, that's a politically correct hindsight 20 if I' ve ever heard one in my life. Cop out kinda even. 😁
I’ll admit I was calling for Venables to go. His D had some tremendous embarrassing meltdowns. He’s obviously done well at Clemson. He’s had some really good Dlines to work with. Perhaps he made that a priority when he went to a Clemson?
Maybe Venables felt like the man left out but, he's hoisting two crystal balls since joining the tigers and maybe more to come. His bank is 2 mil a year. For a d'coordinator.

Bob has been gracious in retirement. Including the eventual firing of Mike. He was quick to turn the cameras back to Lincoln and company when OU beat Ohio State. I am thankful he is assisting a shorthanded staff.
Also props to Saban for open competition at the qb position. It would have been real easy and maybe even expected for him to anoint Tua’s brother the heir apparent but instead went with Jones who has done pretty well it appears. Tua’s bro hit the transfer portal.
Many Sooner fans were calling for Bob to get rid of Venables, and were happy when he left. People seem to have forgotten that.
First time hearin that. Complaints maybe, but Brent was wantin mo money. Alot more and he got it and is reaping.
