Bob brought the spread offense to the Big 12 when came and hired Mike Leach. Now is brother make excuses on how to defend it just unbelievable. TCU not doing so bad at it right now. Brent stopped us twice with his defense.

No denying Mike's return led to BV's departure, which led to a downturn, which escalated to a downward spiral that resulted in the collapse of the OU Defense, and we have sat here, for several years, watching it happen...

IMO, BV was given the boot to 'Make Room 4 Mikee'...Sounds like a Sit-Com that turned out with a Sad Ending and cost our program, dearly...

The current state of OUs defense really makes you wonder if Mike or BV was more responsible for OUs great defenses in the early 2000s. Especially considering the success BV is having on his own once he left OU. Mike hasn't exactly tore it up while being on his own.

I really think it was Brent Venables that was the key to the success. I do remember a lot of people on this board complaining about Coach Venables though.

Mike Stoops does a great job when playing against more traditional offenses. He still hasn't figured out how to defend the spread. He thinks allowing 40 points is a good job

Look back to 2011 before Mike returned, Venables defense was getting torched by TT, Baylor and Okie Lite that year much like what we are seeing with Mikes defenses now. I think the wheels were starting to come off before Mike came back but since he came back it has continued to get worse. Here is an article in which Bob talks about the defense in 2011. Interesting that 6 yrs have passed since then and we are still having the same problems with the defense. Oklahoma was ranked #3 going into the Texas Tech game and lost 41-38. The Sooners would also lose to Baylor 45-38 and got blown out by Okie Lite 44-10. This after starting the season ranked #1 with a win at #5 Florida State 23-13. After a cupcake win and lackluster win vs unranked Missouri the Sooners slipped to #5 and beat #11 Texass 55-17, then the defense took a nose dive vs the high octane offenses of TT, Baylor and Okie Lite. I am not defending Mike but this seemed to have started before he came back but has continued to get worse since his return. So what exactly is going on here?

Part of the problem is competing in a conference featuring wide open offenses and not having enough elite defensive talent to contain those explosive offenses. These two factors make upset losses within conference play commonplace each season.
This trend continues in 2017.
