On the Crimson and Cream scrimmage last night:
- Moser was not lying, the Sooners will play much faster this season.
- Rivaldo Soares was on a heater. Soares was 6-8 from behind the arc. He was very impressive from my vantage point. I doubt that will be a weekly occurrence from him, but if the Sooners can just get half of that it will be huge. My expectations for Soares this season have been raised. He’ll start or be a 7th man.
- Jalon Moore looks the part, and maybe even more. Moore is Oklahoma's best all-around player. Very athletic and relentless at getting to the basket. Moore had many really nice drives and even hit a three. I wouldn’t call him a forward, he’s more of a wing. He was battling with Luke Northweather last night and while Northweather was playing really good defense, Moore continued to score. Seemed like every time he got to the rim it went in from what I saw.
- John Hugley looked much better than I anticipated. He was moving very well and even had a chase-down block on Milos Uzan. Hugley’s jumper looked good and he knocked down multiple threes. He had multiple nice entry passes but did have some risky ones. Hugley even attempted a Kevin Durant-type fade away from the mid-range. It was a bad shot, but he did end up with a foul call. Hugley was also very good at sealing off his defender in the post. I was very surprised by how Hugley looked, there is still some stuff to clean up but there was a lot of good.
- Jalon Moore got the best of Luke Northweather many times but Northweather’s defense last night looked really good. Northweather had a very nice block. He’s going to play a healthy amount of minutes this season. Northweather’s jumper also looks pretty good.
- Le'Tre Darthard didn’t play much due to an injury, but he did hit two threes when he was in. The injury should not be an issue.
- Javian McCollum had “somewhere around 20 points,” I’m told. He did a lot of nice things and hit one three from fairly deep. He was as advertised.
- Otega Oweh did some nice things. He had a few very nice drives.
- Sam Godwin and Milos Uzan also did some solid things, Uzan, in particular, accidentally nailed a half-court three while attempting to throw an alley-oop to Godwin. Safe to say Oklahoma knows who to go to if they need a Buddy Hield vs. West Virginia in the Big 12 tournament type of shot.
- Kaden Cooper is ready to contribute as a true freshman, he had a lot of nice cuts and finishes and was active defensively. His three-point shot doesn’t look the best, but improvement there will come over time.
- It’s pretty cut and dry with who the top 10 are. The three being left out would be Jacolb Cole, Yaya Keita, and Maks Klanjscek. I’d rank them in that order.
- The three-point shooting was much better than expected from what I’ve heard and seen.
