Anyone remember if the Bedlam Game

Perhaps 1984...weren't both teams in the top five for that matchup?

ever came down to whoever won, was the outright conference champion? I can't think of it ever happening!

Oklahoma State has won 2 conference championships. Their first, in 1926 as Oklahoma A&M, was an outright conference championship, and their record was 3-4-1 overall but they had a conference record of 3-0 and tied OU that year 14-14.

Their last conference championship was in 1976, and they shared it with OU and Colorado. This was the Terry Miller year, and they beat OU 31-24, although the game was played in October (I believe), so it wasn't played as the last game of the season. All three champions that year had 5-2 records (OU, Colorado, OSU) and OU had a 9-2-1 overall record, OSU was 9-3, and Colorado was 9-4. This was the year we tied Texas 6-6 when the extra point snap sailed off our guy's hands after scoring. We beat Wyoming 41-7 in the Fiesta Bowl.

I remember that year pretty well, mostly because of Terry Miller - I thought he was a great running back, and then I saw Billy Sims and Barry Sanders. I absolutely remember the Texas game, because we had driven down to Dallas (I was 10) and couldn't get tickets, then had to drive back to the north to get out of the local tv viewing area because it was blacked out. We stopped at every motel along I-35 until we hit one that was getting the game...I believe it was Bud Hebert was the holder. Unfortunate. Must've been Von Schauman was the PK.

So yeah - it's never come down to a winner take all game. It's only been recently, in the series, that we play them at the end of the year. In the past, we played them in September and October.

Yeah, I remember how I thought the sky was falling having to share the title with lowly Colorado and the pokes...this right on the heels of OU being the all conquering world killer National Champs in 1974 and 1975.
It just didn't seem right.

There were a couple of times when it determined the conference champ or co champ, but not at the end of the season.

Remember that Nebraska best the Pokes close to 40 straight seasons. So if they played us last, they already had a loss. And we weren't in the same conference until 1960. And they weren't very good except for maybe five or six seasons.

In '84, OU lost to Kansas in October. So we went to Bedlam with one loss, OSU had their loss to Nebraska. OU had won in Lincoln the week before. So if they'd beaten us, they'd have had a co title with the Huskers, but Nebraska had beaten them, so they couldn't go to the OB. That was the year we got screwed in Dallas in the rain. But with that tie and a loss, Barry was still campaigning for the NC, because BYU was undefeated, but hadn't played anybody. Then they got 6-5 Michigan in the Holiday Bowl which was less a bowl than it is now. BUt UDub was pretty good and beat us after the Schooner driver got a penalty that negated an OU field goal late third I believe.

So Bedlam did determine the conference title, and both team entered with one loss, but OSU was out of it before kickoff.

In 86 and 87 it was a huge game, but neither was at the end of the year and both times, they'd already lost their only game to the Huskers and then lost to OU.

From 87 til 97 they didnt' win as many as eight games, but those were the Blake years and neither was in contention. And the games weren't at the end of the year.

Most everybody remembers the rest. The closest was when they beat us in 02 already having two conference losses. We shot a chance at the NC game at A&M earlier. In 2001 they knocked OU out of the CCG, which if won would have sent us to the NC game. But OUr team was so beat up, OUr offense was as bad as Florida this season.

Yep, the 2001 loss to them was especially galling.
Man...just had to beat them, win the CCG, Natty title, two years in a row...Uh...that one hurt, a lot.

Well, I'm always looking for the most consoling victory against a given foe...

In that regard, this game we just won two days ago vs the Pokes is right up there in Sooner lore.

Just huge, in the implications, league hierarchy, the natural order of things re-established.
Massive win...still getting a little giddy about it actually...(my grin here)

A little giddy?? Perhaps the understatement of the Century. ;)
