Today's Tulsa World reported that Ross has been named an AA kick returner by "numerous" preseason publications, and yesterday he was added to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List, which is given to the most versatile player in college football each year. We all know what a great job he did last year returning punts for the Sooners averaging 31 yards a return and going the distance on two occasions. I'm on record as being a Alex Ross fan since watching him play at Jenks, but have been disappointed in him thus far at OU. Then today I am reminded that Alex averaged 6.8 yards a carry last year sharing time with Perine and Ford. Alex gained 595 yards on just 88 carries, so now I feel a bit ashamed of myself. Last year was his first season to have really have a chance to show what he can do. He showed plenty. I was too critical of him and I now admit it. Yes, he does seem to go down more easily than Perine...but who doesn't. But when he gets into space, he is always a real threat to score from any place on the field. According to the Tulsa World article, Ross seems to like Lincoln Riley's new offense. "It's like you make the decision and you go with it and that's what happens. You don't really second guess yourself and its really straightforward." That to me sounds pretty good. So even with the anticipation of seeing Samaje and Joe Mixon in Riley's offense, I am still a very big fan of Alex Ross, and this year I will pay more attention to what he accomplishes on the field instead of being so critical. Hey, these aren't highschoolers that he is playing against. Sometimes we fans expect too much from our highschool heroes.

Good Read, Okla...

I, too, sometimes fail to adequately appreciate ALL of the members of the team...Samaje sets the bar so stinkin' high, that 'Others' pale, by comparison. We do have a lot of Unsung Heroes...Each player brings his own 'Something Special' to the team and each contribution is different, but important...

This is a link to the Hornung List...

Sorry, about that.....my AD must be "kicking" in. I meant to post kick returner....I will edit my OP. Good catch. Thanks.

I wasn't cracking on you - I was pointing out how funny it is that numerous publications could name him an AA for returning punts when he doesn't return punts. I don't think many national publications even do homework anymore, except for Phil Steele. Sorry, wasn't directed at you.

del rio, I didn't even consider that you were busting my balls. No big deal. I just typed in one thing while thinking another, and did so twice. Once in the subject line and yet again in the post.......damn, this is happening way too much. Oh, well, it is what it. Thanks again.

The two kickoff returns for touchdowns by Ross in the West Virginia and Texas games were ultimately the game winning plays and prevented OU from losing 2 more games. If he can run better between the tackles, OU will really have a solid one-two punch.
