Brent Venables Missed Media Opps

Just a quick note and I am not going to get too deep in the weeds on it, but in an effort to quell the inevitable questions that will be bandied about in the wake of Sooners Head Coach Brent Venables missing two scheduled media opportunities today, I point you back to James’ notebook from Monday.

Venables missed this mornings SEC conference call and a scheduled appearance with local media this evening after practice.

If you recall, back on Monday in his Notebook, James wrote


“***Coach Venables has a lot on his mind right now as his wife Julie needs more surgery to remove a tumor.”

We know Coach Venables and Julie traveled to an appointment earlier in the week and we believe his lack of availability is likely tied to this situation.

We will leave it at that.

When BV and JL were hired, its was anticipated Lebby would only be at OU for two years. Why is OU now scrambling to find a replacement for an OC that couldn’t make it through one season, combined with a team that appears to be searching for new ways to lose games.

Was the entire plan to get by on the cheap after JL left in terms of a replacement? Further, there was minimal effort to put together an SEC caliber offensive line.

Now that the plan has blown up, OU is willing to pay anything to find anyone willing to join a team for a year in an effort to save BV’s career, as well as Joe C’s. What is going to happen at the end of next season?

I figure that some of yall have some suggestions and I would be curious to see if there is a consensus. Do we want an established HC from the college ranks, NFL HC/OC/DC, or 1st time HC(doubtful after these last 2 experiments)?

Would we want a Chip Kelly or Dan Mullen? Would we want a Cignetti, Jed Fisch, or Norvell?

What are some names yall would be willing to bring in?

I thought @Parker Thune or @Brandon Drumm had posted about Jaden’s visit to Colorado, if so I couldn’t find it so I’ll put this note here

@Brandon Drumm You seem to have a good relationship with this young man. Where do u stand on this???

I’m pretty sure he’s not hurt so why is he not getting any playing time? He can’t be any worse than some of these other receivers that they have put out on the field.

I’m sitting here watching their game vs Arkansas. Did Texass make some type of under the table deal with the SEC to get this favorable schedule + officiating? The discrepancy between their schedule and ours + the officiating is outrageous.

Young, primary caller at Western Kentucky and Washington St. Offense is in line with what LR did here. Has Washington St. in the top 30 offensively. Thoughts?

Been on the phone most of the day collecting insights on a number of different things. We've got post-practice player availabilities tonight, and I'll have some recruiting notes coming in the not-too-distant future as well. But obviously, what is of most concern to many of you is the situation on the offensive staff and the pending search for a new OC. So how is it that the thunder can COMPLETELY lose a position group (zero centers), yet they find ways to play incredibly and win games. Our football team lays an egg and goes in the tank under the same conditions. I’d say our coaches aren’t very resourceful.

So it is a little early for this discussion, but who cares. Who are some names besides the Tulane and Washington State QB’s? Does Cam Rising have a year left? Jaylen Daniels from KU is intriguing, especially if the OC is Mullen. Bring someone like this in and let Hawk develop for one more year under the new OC.

That’s the day Brent got the big multi-year contract extension Joe has to live with…….and so do OU fans. Not Good!!

Their season was in the toilet a month into the season but they’ve kept fighting and have gotten so much better. They could beat anyone in the big12 right now. Wonder what that would be like…

It pains me with every fiber of my being and my soul to say that OU could take a page out of Sark's playcalling regarding the screen game. We have struggled with this for years and a team with a terrible offensive line, it is a young QB's best friend. Although you do have to have people that know how to get open also.

Is there need for hiring OC quickly/ before seasons end? I just wonder does this limit options and assume the big positive in making this decision quickly is recruiting purposes?

Is it appropriate to question the staff's ability to evaluate players, given that JAF was here for a year, and they picked him over Gabriel?
Then, look at the current use of running backs and receivers. Have the best players been utilized the most this season?
I need to be convinced the program is heading in the right direction, compared with making significant changes immediately after the LSU game.

Hearing BV will probably be fired after the season unless we somehow win one of the last two games. Have you all heard that? If so, do you all believe it? @Brandon Drumm @Parker Thune

That’s a bad football team. Heads should roll just because of losing that game.
