Field Vision: Evaluating Zac Alley's Coaching Style

Let's take a look at the stats and the film and get a better idea of how Oklahoma's new defensive coordinator, Zac Alley, might call the defense in Norman.

Also, here's a summary of what I gathered from watching the film and how Alley's defense compares and contrasts to that of his mentor, Brent Venables. https://oklahoma.rivals.com/news/fi...c-alley-s-defense-compare-to-venables-scheme-

Information regarding staff

By my count:

OU has a analyst job open (Matt Wells)
OU has a analyst job open (Seth Litrell)
OU has a analyst/OL job open (Phil Loadholt)

As well as two or three other support positions and the On Campus recruiting coordinator……..

I seek information and intelligence about potential candidates/hires …… surely there is some scuttle-butt ?

And, it’s understood that ALL of the first three may not be filled.

This is the kind of “in the weeds information” I look for.

Not a criticism…….just a question.

Recruiting QBs nowadays

The policy always been recruit 1QB per class. The 24 class is an exception, but when you consider NIL nowadays, coaches moving, transfer portal and playing time. It’s such an important position you can’t miss with recruiting just one. Look what happened to us last year DG goes down who comes in? This upcoming season if JA goes down you bring in a true freshman in the hardest conference! Recruit 2 most years a HS or portal QBs isn’t a bad idea is it??

Oklahoma, represented by safeties coach Brandon Hall, swung through Mesquite (Texas) Horn today. That’s where 2025 OL Lamont Rogers, 2026 S Markel Ford and 2026 ATH Legend Bey play their ball. The Sooners have offered all three, and in my judgment, they lead right now for Ford and Bey. I have a longstanding FutureCast to OU in Bey’s case.

Of note here, I’m told each member of the trio plans to visit Norman on the 27th.

Hatchett Boys

Did a little of my own digging about these two guys and I do hope they both make their way to OU. Adding two guys that started as freshman has got to help. what really got my attention, though, was a quote from their mother asking the “keyboard warriors” to leave them alone while they make their decisions. I have a son who’s a freshman in college and I sympathize with her. Seeing the horrible things people who have never even met her kids are posting about them has got to be heart-breaking. Anyway…I hope they end up Sooners, but if not, I wish them well and hope they make the best decision for them and their mom.

If Lance Heard picks OU at this point, it’ll be because Bill Bedenbaugh brought it on home. Sources have indicated to me that both Tennessee and Ole Miss have sweetened the pot significantly for the former five-star OT. The Sooners have done about all they’re willing to do, much as in the case of Chris McClellan, and now simply await the decision. Conversations with Heard and his camp have been ongoing, but the one and only question is whether Heard is willing to make some concessions in the short term for the potential long-term benefits of developing under Bedenbaugh.

The same goes for Terrence Ferguson, as multiple sources have noted that he’s got the same handler as one Walter Nolen. I want to emphasize that Oklahoma is NOT out for either player, as both have continued to be receptive to the Sooners’ overtures. But it’s worth understanding that OU isn’t going to budge on their principles when it comes to NIL. It’s a take-it-or-leave-it proposition at this point.

Caiden Woullard took it. McClellan left it. Deion Burks took it. Geno VanDeMark left it.

I can’t tell you what the outcome is here, but hopefully that helps to shed some light on what OU is up against.

Boise State's Spencer Danielson dishes on Zac Alley: ‘That’s a smart football coach’

I caught up with Boise State coach Spencer Danielson, where he talked with me about Zac Alley's development and why he's ready to be OU's new co-defensive coordinator:
