This is the Sooner Scoop from all the way back to 2003

My favorite part is about our future ‘star’ quarterback Rhett Bomar

The Sooner Scoop will always have a lot of inside information or sensitive information that doesn’t need to be discussed in public forums and on other websites. So what is said in the Sooner Scoop stays in the Sooner Scoop.

This only works if you guys make it work, and if it becomes and issue, we’ll begin to cut back on the amount of good information that is passed on in here.

The Sooner Scoop – Friday, August 1, 2003

You want the Scoop? You can’t handle The Scoop?

Bob Stoops was glowing on Wednesday at the Big 12 Media Day.

From all the talk about being the top dog in the preseason polls to landing the top dog in Rhett Bomar, life is good for Stoops right now. While it’s against NCAA rules to talk specifically about a recruit there is no question that Stoops is excited about his future star quarterback.

“When you land a top quarterback is makes it so much easier to build a class around,” Stoops said without specifically mentioning the name Bomar. “It allows you to go there and target other offensive players and tell them that you can come in and also be the center piece of a great offensive attack.

“Some might think it might scare away big name running backs (Adrian Peterson anybody), but I don’t think that’s the case at all. The best players want to play with the other great players and that’s something that will be a very strong recruiting pitch for us now.”

You better believe that it is something that OU will use to real in quite a few receiver prospects, also. And guys like Fred Strong are pumped to hear about Bomar.

“They got Bomar,” Strong, a three-star receiver, asked when he heard the news. “That’s awesome. I’ve seen him on TV and he looks like a stud. I’m can’t wait to hook up with him.”

There is even some thought that Bomar is a high enough level of a national recruit that it could help reel in some defensive players. Only time will tell on that front, but there is no doubting that Stoops is still glowing – as he should be.

The word of Bomar’s commitment was going around like wild fire last weekend but it wasn’t until late on Sunday when coach Stoops actually got to talk to the star quarterback. Bomar’s commitment got co-defensive coordinator Brent Venables so fired up that he took his family on a shopping spree at Toys ’R Us.

Georgia might be miles away from Oklahoma, but if you look the number of prospects listing OU in the Peach State is starting to increase. The reason why? None other than OU assistant coach Cale Gundy.

Gundy is quickly making a name for himself with high school coaches and the top prospects down South. If you look the names of Georgia players liking OU has continued to grow and grow.

Ramarcus Brown of East Point, Ga., is still leaning toward OU, Warner Robins, Ga., athlete Cedric Hodgesjust received an offer from the Sooners, Sandy Creek receiver Calvin Johnson will visit Norman, stud linebacker Josh Johnson of Stone Mountain is listing OU at No. 2 on his list and fullback Brannon Southerland of Norcross, Ga., might visit before making a decision.

That’s a remarkable step up from the past when OU wasn’t even making a dent in the talent rich state – other than Antwone Savage. But the Sooners broke through last season again with a pledge from running Tashard Choice and they look to be sticking around in the battles for the state’s best.

“We expect OU to sign at least one or two players a year now from down here,” said a respected high school coach in the Atlanta area. “Oklahoma has so many positives that they can sell a kid here that’s looking to get away from the SEC and do his own thing. They might not get all the players, but you can bet coach Gundy will get his fair share over the years.”

And even the college coaches are noticing Gundy’s efforts.

“We’ve never had to worry about Oklahoma with an in-state kid,” said an assistant at a big time school in Georgia. “But now they’re a factor. They’re going to get somebody ever year now and that troubles us.”

Trouble for them, good news for OU.

What’s also impressive is that OU working hard on kids at schools in Georgia that always, always, always have great players. Ask any SEC recruiting fan about Warner Robins and how many players that area produces every year.

While you’re ask it, query them on how loaded Sandy Creek and Stone Mountain Stephenson are every season.

It’s a good plan of attack that OU and Gundy have unveiled and it looks like it’s going to pay off with future stud recruits.

What’s the latest news with Alan Davis II? Scoop’s got your fix. Here’s the latest word-for-word from Alan’s father:

“After going 3-0 and winning their pool at the 7-on-7 state, Colleyville was matched up against Odessa Permian in the first round,” his father said.

“This was a great game. You could compare it to a game of ping-pong. As the ball and touchdowns were being matched up by each team back and forth. Everyone then knew that the out come of the game would come down to which team had the ball last. As it turned out, it was OP that had it last and we ended losing by six points. I guess if you had to lose, it’s best to lose to the team that goes on and wins the eventual crown.

“Prior to that he was playing a little basketball with his traveling team in the Denton summer basketball shootout in Denton, Texas, where there was over 300 teams from around the country participating.

“We will be taking Alan’s mother to visit Oklahoma next week Aug 5-6. The OU team reports on Tuesday and first practice is on the sixth. OU will host a fan appreciation day on Aug. 9th, and we’re not sure if we will stay that long. We will need to get back, due to Alan starting his two a days August 11.

“After this visit to OU, and maybe one again to LSU the following weekend if schedule and time allow, Alan would like to commit, so he can focus on improving his 3.4 grade point to go along with score of 910 on SAT and enjoying those wonderful high school days like a kids should do.”

Obviously, Scoop is still calling this one for the Sooners.

The same is true for Chris Patterson. Scoop had a talk with our good friend Edgy Tim up in Illinois. He’s gotten to know Patterson quite well and he said that if Chris doesn’t commit to the Sooners when he visits with his mother next week then he’d be shocked.

We agree. Watch for both Patterson and Davis to come down to the Sooners within the next few weeks. Nothing like adding five and four-star commitments to the list, eh?
