I'll add. Decimal does not always mean metric. U.S. currency is 10 small units (dimes) equal the principal unit (dollar) meaning metric. 10 mils = 1 cent. Hope this helps.

"Come around"? I came around at Taft Elementary in Lawton in the second grade when I was first introduced to the structure and history of the U. S. dollar. I came around and learned to measure paint drop cloths when I bought my first plastic 2 mil drop cloth at Sherman-Williams eons ago.

The buck is measured in monetary mils (mils) while the drop cloth is measured in mils. Both mils mean 1/1000ths of a unit. That is, buck (metric) and drop cloth (Imperial or English inch/pound).

I'm one of a handful of people in the world who knows the numerically dysfunctional and idiotic English system of measurement. I can ask you questions till the sun comes up in the morning that you can't answer. But even I must always be armed with a calculator.

Any dope in Mexico City will tell me how many meters are in 1.2 kilometers. Mensa genius 160 IQ Geena Davis hasn't a clue how many yards are in 1.2 miles. The U. S. remains stuck in a hybrid system that saddles taxpayers and business with staggering costs, with being out of step with the world. Note the Mars lander lost because the vehicle maker used English and NASA used metric. Conversion mistakes killed the high dollar lander. Today NASA is metric only in operations. English measure is used in public announcements. U. S exports sometime costs millions in mistakes alone. Russia will not accept Tyson chickens in pounds.

By hybrid I mean my 1 Liter Listerine bottle and my 1 quart milk carton.

Our conversion to metric is still on going. Visit a woman's hair salon and look at the hard metric sizes. 300 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL.

Half gallon (1.89 L) orange juice? Most has been replaced with a hard metric 1.75 L plastic or glass. Many old 1/2 gallon paper cartons now contain 1.75 liters leaving more space in the carton.

See the caulks at Home Depot? Used to be 10 fl. oz. 296mL. Today most are 300 mL 10.1 fl. oz. My after shave used to be Old Spice 4 fl. oz. 118mL. Today a hard metric125 mL 4.2 fl. oz.

See the regular sized oil bottles at Auto Zone? Every single last one of them are 1 Liter although the bottle contains 1 U. S. quart or 946 mL. Mobil began the bottle size change in the mid '90s and Conoco completed this change circa 2002.

Oops! I've talked to mechanics who have overfilled crankcases because some refinery robots put a whole liter in the bottle.

It's becoming painfully evident that getting through to you is completely beyond my reach. I wish I could do better.
