Attended Friday practice and Saturday scrimmage. My take primarily on offense. (QB's)- Mayfield is what he is (great player) Kendall very good also, has great command of offense and makes plays! Big time throw to Abdul Adam's off play action naked while sprinting to his left and throwing back to his right and fits ball over defender and hits him in stride for a 70 Yard TD on wheel route out of backfield. Murray may be best athlete on field and made numerous long runs on read plays and QB draw, made a few plays in passing game but a little inconsistent. I'm sure they will have a package for him! Heard a defender say he was fastest player on the field. Robison did some good things Friday but did not participate on Saturday due to illness. Walk-on QB Schaefer played well in scrimmage. (RB's)- Friday's practice not impressed, but Saturday completely different story in part to how O-Line played and Friday was an installation day. Most of you have probably watched video with Boulware and I will start with Anderson who physically looks like Perine but faster. Being used on kick returns, will be interesting when he returns to contact but very impressive in non-contact drills. Adams a pleasant surprise as he was outstanding in sat. scrimmage running and catching the football, showed great patience, footwork and showed some explosiveness we had not seen to this point. Sutton plays hard and can make people miss and is a versatile back. Sermon is a big back who made a lot of plays in scrimmage, busted around a 50 yard run and ran by some defenders before DB who had angle trip him up on the 1 yard line. Going to be very good. Hall looks to be another Flowers (we all know that is good to be compared to him). Flowers went thru non-contact drills like Anderson and did not dress for scrimmage. (O-Line)- Stated that O-Line may have played a part in Friday's assessment of running backs but they are outstanding with depth across the board (again looked like install day). Highlight was Brown started a fight with Terry and Evans some how got involved and Terry went after them throwing some good haymakers! Bedenbaugh stated they are usually trying to find quality depth and mixing and matching but not the case at this point, commented some very good players will be hard to find playing time for. Cody Ford is massive as is Brown. They are really high on Creed Humphrey at center. O-Line came to play at Sat.scrimmage. If they had an issue it would be they did not pick up a few inside linebacker blitzes as defense doing some things we have not seen them do in awhile (crossing both linebackers with movement up front). (TE's)- Andrews caught a couple of balls in Friday
practice and really not targeted in Sat. scrimmage. Calcaterra is Andrews all over but more athletic and couple of catches on Sat. but also not targeted much. Mier also saw time at FB/H Back.
(WR's)- Brown 2 TD's on screens from 30-35 out Sat. and almost had another 30 yard or so TD but tackled inside 10 yard line on short catch and run. They are playing him as an outside receiver and in the two practices he never won on a route over the top (DB's only gave up a couple of homeruns in the two practices a big turnaround for them). Brown is extremely quick and explosive! Mead had a good two days and had a great catch in the endzone on a fade route called back by penalty in the scrimmage. Mykel Jones not targeted much in the two days. Basquine great possession receiver as we saw last season! Dahu Green made a few plays with A.D. Miller and Smallwood not participating. Should be another great offensive football team! (Kicker)- Seibert was very good in scrimmage and did not miss a field goal. Looked very good!
Not going to get into defense other than to say everyone will like Murry, Gumbs, Draper, Broiles, Jackson, etc... they are an impressive Freshmen group! I believe defense will be better defensively with combination of "new' and "old" schemes. Mayfield "heckling" Mike Stoops as he was coming down from middle of stadium after scrimmage. My understanding Mike Stoops said they would not get beat over the top for a TD pass and Mayfield was reminding him of the wheel route Abdul Adams caught for the long TD.
Joe Mixon at Friday practice and still brings a lot of energy to practice. Mayfield told him if he got any bigger he would be a "pulling guard" in NFL. Players seemed excited to see him there. Bob Stoops gave him a lot of attention. Bob seemed more jovial and interacted with coaches in attendance more than he usually does! Enough of my rambling. Have a great day!
