So I got curious and looked this up because I got tired of hearing the excuse of “Well mike has to defend more plays!!”

I figured we would be in the 60s. Turns out we sit at 27th in points per play given up at .278 which is 2 spots higher than Texas who sits at 29th.

This is very interesting to me. The only way to gauge our defense is by putting it on an even playing field. Points per play seems to negate any “number of plays” argument.

I’m sure like me you think “these stats have to be skewed some way”, well this is the top 10:

1. Alabama
2. Auburn
3. Kentucky
4. Iowa
5. Cincinnati
6. Washington
7. Michigan
8. Florida
9. NC State
10. Georgia

That’s a a pretty good list of top 10 defenses.

I hate Mike Stoops more than anyone...but I feel like this defense is a tad better than what we’ve been used to the past 5 years. Saturday will be another measuring stick.

For reference we finished 16th in 2004 with what we thought was a pretty good defense as they gave up .258 Points Per Play.

While the 2017 defense was GAWD AWFUL at .391 Points Per Play good enough for 67th.

PS
Also offensively we are #1 in Points Per Play at .807 and Alabama is #2.
